Arite ppl. Just wondering if any1 could help me with a small problem i'm getting with FL Studio 5.

Whenever i start a project it seems to run really smoothly, no crackling, no slow down, however once it starts getting more complex its almost completely impossible to start working on it. I get immense crackling sounds and its so slow, i cant even play back my song properly as it jerks back and forth and struggles to play. Its really hindering my production and i was wondering if theres anything that i've got set wrong that could be doing this?

I thought my computer would be able to handle FL Studio pretty well considering its quite a high end spec laptop i'm using... HP Pavillion ZX5000

Specs:

P4 3.2GHz HT
512MB Ram
80gb Hardrive
Radeon 9200 64mb Graphics.

It runs half-life 2 perfectly. Do i require a minted external soundcard for FL Studio to run fine?

you need to higher the buffer length in you fl studio settings...

i had the same problem too, but then i realized my buffer length was too short. It will fix your problems

You can also bounce some instruments to wav to lower your cpu usage, but for me that is not an option (i want to keep tweaking till the song is done)

I've upped the buffer length full whack, still the same problems although it has improved performance a lot more. Could it be because i have a lot of VSTi's running, such as Pro53 and Reaktor.

On settings, make sure that "Reset plugins on transport" is turned off!

thanks for the help guys, its really helped improve the performance i can work alot better now . I also think its because i was running too many VST's.

I dont have a stellar soundcard would that coz slowdown? or for one to have a good production computer does it not necessarily rely on sound but the RAM? I cant help but keep thinking 512mb is not enough

It's just soon i will be getting a decent M-Audio external soundcard for my laptop hoping it will improve performance so FL Studio runs smooth. I know i've got enough CPU power but it will be a disappointment if i pay a fortune for this external soundcard to find its changed nothing

I dont think a new soundcard will help you. I have the same problem - bought a M-Audio Delta Audiophile - and still I can't really work on too complex projects. That's simply because some VSTplugins are huge resource eaters. For example rgc z3ta+, a great synth, but I just can't work with it because multiple instances of it make my comp suffer badly. You can either try to use different plugins using less CPU load or to bounce some layers to wav and remove the cpu-extensive plugins then.

okay its fair to say i need a super computer thanks for the help, i'll bounce some things to wav instead to save resources

Efficiently tweaking your computer helps fine. Mine works like a beauty imo. It's just an amd2500+ and it runs several vsts (about 8-15 in most tracks) without a problem. among these vst's are cpu hogs like z3ta+. stylus remix and more.

What I do notice is a rather remarkably feature my sequencer has. I've never seen it in any (expensive) application (like Cubase, nuendo, fruityloops) thus far. My sequencer turns of a VSTI when it is not being used. Therefore there is improvement in the overall performance. It probably reduces the cpu usage overall with 20%.

I think you could be fine with what you have. A better soundcard would be nice, but after that you should be able to pull of quite a bit, if not, you're doing something wrong imo.

thats a class feature Storyteller. What sequencer do u use?

I know my laptop shud run things smoothly but its struggling with 3 Reaktor VSTs and 2 Pro 53's running I may give it a format sometime soon once i've backed my work up that may help

The sequencer I use is called Renoise.

Other tricks you might try is to create a seperate boot up for audio purposes only. If your pc doesn't have to run all kinds of crappy software on the background it might pull of a bit more
