A passenger plane has crashed in Peru's Amazon jungle killing at least 70 people on board and injuring many more.
Only 20 to 30 of the 93 passengers and seven crew on the internal flight from the capital Lima to the city of Pucallpa are reported to have survived.
Witnesses say the Boeing 737-200 was approaching Pucallpa airport in bad weather when it experienced problems.
The Tans airline which operated the plane said the pilot had attempted an emergency landing on a jungle road.
Final destination
Emergency workers at the scene have reported bodies littering the crash site, including many children and babies.
Others of the dead are trapped inside the plane, officials said.
The jet was just five kilometres (three miles) from Pucallpa airport when the crash occurred at 1506 (2006GMT), air traffic control officials said.
Pucallpa is 490km (305 miles) north-east of Lima.
After a stop in Pucallpa the plane had been due to travel on to Iquitos in the northern jungle near the Colombian and Brazilian borders.
Bad weather
Although the cause of the crash is not yet known a storm had just broken as the plane came in to land, witnesses said.
"It seems it was a matter of the weather. Ten minutes before we were to land in Pucallpa, the plane began to shake a lot," said passenger Tomas Ruiz.
Another survivor, William Zea, who sustained a burned hand in the crash said "the plane had problems and we fell".
The crash comes a week after a Colombian plane crashed in Venezuela killing all 160 people on board, most of them French citizens from the Caribbean island of Martinique.
And on 14 August a Cypriot plane crashed near Athens killing all 121 passengers. |
Flying scares the shit out of me enough as it is without all these crashes happening
