Paul Oakenfold - Zoo York pisses me off

i am a huge fan of decent to above decent quality films. for anyone who hasn't had the pleasure, Darren Arnofsky's Requiem for A Dream was an incredible film Visually, Storily (is that a word), and Aurally. If you catch the film or just pick up the mp3s somewhere, Clint Mansell wrote some ambient and powerfully gloomy beats with The Kronos Quartet strumming along for a really incredible films core (imho). I was just downloading some tracks i've been more than a bit behind on and i dled Bunkkaa and Zoo York is either supposed to a remix of "the Hope Overture" or is a blatant ripoff. I'm assuming a big honcho like him has the rights but good god if your going to do a remix of such an awesome film score lead song do it GOOD! The original was already downtempo electronicish and Oakey farted on it.

I'm just ranting here, but Jakatta's remix of the American Beauty Theme (Joey Negro Mix) is fucking to die for because the two of them bumped the song up to the next level. If oakey was going to go through the trouble to nab the rights to this one, he shouldv'e passed it over to someone who would take it to a new level. this would have been a wicked dark trance string anthem. bastards.

no, i dont think the whole CD is terrible, its just not for us trance heads....

darklord, i noticd you have SouthernSun (tiesto) as your number 1 current top track. i'd a taken the g&d mix i think. i do agree that those are the only two songs tranceheads can cuddle up with though, and that sort of thing is what i was hoping for. i'm sick of people 'breaking out of the mold' just because a style is becoming perennial. sometimes i LIKE the mold damn it. those bastards!

I agree with you that the Hope overture is a classic and was one of my favs for the year. However Oakie didn't butcher it that bad, it grew on me after a while.

AND...a heads up, there is a new cd out called Requiem for a Dream project and it has all the themes remixed. So I've heard via another board. In Canada it apparently came out yesterday, check it out man. And keep me updated. heh

From what I read on an official page of the original composer of the track, he said that he asked oakey to make a mix of it, wanting "someone special" to additional production.. Unfortunatelly, you will have to dig out the site by yourself: I found it when I asked exactly same question to myself back when i first heard bunkka

02 Plant - In The End Its All Nice
03 Psilonaut - Ghosts In The Machine
04 Paul Oakenfold - Aeternal
05 Clint Mansell - Seacoast Towers (Film Score)
06 Jagz Kooner - Coney Island Express
07 Clint Mansell - Seacoast Alarm (Film Score)
08 Wish FM - Haunted Dreams
09 Kronos Quartet - Tense
10 Josh Wink - Full Tense
11 Clint Mansell - Food (Film Score)
12 Delirium - Deluxed
13 Clint Mansell - Island (Film Score)
14 A Guy Called Gerald - Body And Fear
15 Clint Mansell - 112 (Film Score)
16 ILS - Overturned
17 Clint Mansell - Sara (Film Score)
18 Hive - Hand Jive
19 Clint Mansell - Arnold (Film Score)
20 Clint Mansell - Ghosts (Vocal Version)

----------------------------------------------------------

Original music composed by Clint Mansell.
Track 2 additional producti-on & remix by Plant.
Track 3 additional production & remix by Psilonaut.
Track 4 additional production & remix by Paul Oakenfold & Andy Gray.
Track 6 additional production & remix by Jagz Kooner.
Track 8 additional production & remix by Wish FM.
Track 9 written by Kronos Quartet.
Track 10 additional production & remix by Josh Wink.
Track 12 additional production & remix by Bill Leeb & Rhys Fulber.
Track 14 additional production & remix by A Guy Called Gerald.
Track 16 additional production & remix by ILS.
Track 18 additional production & remix by Jagz Kooner.

Requiem For A Dream is easily one of the most rewarding (if not the most
rewarding) movie of 2000, both visually and conceptually. Just like with
Pi, Clint Mansell again teams up with Darren Aronofsky to provide an
unsettling and edgy score for an equally disturbing and mind-boggling
movie. Pi had a sophisticated and uncompromising soundtrack that mixed
Clint Mansell's (formerly of PWEI fame) dramatic & unnerving score with
dark and brooding electronic beats from some of the most crtically
acclaimed acts of the 90's. In 2000, Mr. Mansell supplied a fantastic
nightmarish soundtrack to Requiem and planned a similar mash-up
compilation, which at that time was titled as Requiem For A Dream - The
Remix Project. Some two years later and many delays aside the project
finally sees the commercial light of the day as the Remixed album with a
choice selection of artists such as ILS, Jagz Kooner, Josh Wink and A Guy
Called Gerald providing top notch aurally challenging soundscapes.

Yep... southern sun (tiesto) is the only music that is hearable (it's 'the' last track that I mentioned) but I'd prefer if in the CD were the unreleased version, that Tiesto plays in Club Space (the only difference is on the chorus, but for me it's a big one )...

And about oakman... well, personally, I prefer his remixing skills to his producing side... coz 1 thing that I've repaired is that in sets, Tranceport-like CD's and else, oakman r0x... but when it comes to the producing... it's just not the style that I like the most. Most like a techno-mixed-with-hip-hop-or-something that I cannot name. If they're remixed, I, as a TA, like them most. But this is only my opinion, my point of view, my taste, whatever you wanna call it

Now THAT was a useful post!

So i guess it remains to be seen whether the Remix Project is good (imo at least)..
