Computer Help

Ok so most of you hardcore gamers are also Computer guys too! Im gonna set up an online retail site and I need to know the following:

1. What is a server how do you work it and which specs should I get?

Thanks more questions to follow after this lol if its in the wrong forum sorry but it makes more sense in here.
