I am curious as to what originally made you guys like EDM, or trance, or techno or whatever you like. For me, and until I came here, I figured the attraction was pretty uniform. But I see that it's definetly not. What I am saying is, I thought that trance was good if it gave you that spine tingling breakdown, or sweep that gave you chills everytime you listened to it. From the first time I heard a song (by a little known local DJ named Pablo!) that gave me that experience no other type of music could do it for me. I had to feel that again and again and again and it's kept my search for new 'fixes' constant for years now. But much of the music that I have been researching from here has been so....so very polar from what I had embodied trance to be. Breakbeat, and ethereal almost with no breakdown, no sweep, basically a collaboration of sounds that ends after no climax or buildup. Songs like Sander Kleinenbergs 'The Fruit' sounds like REALLY cheesy rap or some crap. Certainly not trance. And the house music that sounds like bad disco sent through the latest version of Fruityloops in most cases. I am not trying to bash anyones' taste but I am just a little disappointed. I have not been a part of any 'scene,' whether it be trance, house, prog, so I can't really track the migration of the genres' but is this (breakbeat & house) where the trance scene has delved? It seems that a majority of the people here cast off the trance that I know, as cheese. I just want to truly understand what I am saying to someone when I explain that I like trance music. Because if trance is now categorized as Aphex Twin and Deep Dish, I certainly haven't been labeling myself correctly.

you are right. Sander Kleinenberg and Deep Dish are not trance and is not meant to give you any euphoric breakdowns and stuff.

This is the current state in the scene:
The melodic uplifting trance you are searching for still exist but is biting its own tail since its been trying to copy its own sound for yaers. This is the main reason why many people which earlier enjoyed listening to uplifting trance now listen to other stuff.

The hardtrance scene is practically dead too. Many earlier producers either went cheese and started doing eurodance or hardstyle. The latter is quite popular in Benelux and is an orgy of cheese which the crowd buys happily. Now you don't even need talent to produce a tune!

When it comes to psytrance in the last couple of years what was left of goa trance disapeared and instead israeli full on trance evolved. It was cool in the beginning but now it seems like every israeli in that godforsaken land is pumping out tunes. And they are all using the same formula. They are so identical that you can't tell one producer from the other. The final proof how shitty this scene went is looking at Infected Mushroom. Once hailed as the future of israeli psytrance scene. Now producing cheesy poptrance with a singer which can't even sing.

The only last hope remaining for trance lies within the Scandinavians. Here we have a strong scene and with interesting underground producers and labels which doesn't just spit out tunes without thinking before. Labels such as Iboga, Spiral Trax, Moonflower Production and Digital Structure releases a hybrid of the best elements from the progressive trance scene with the best from psytrance. The result is deep driving trance with that extra go.
As long as these labels continue releasing their goods there is still hope for trance music.
Most others failed.

Btw I'm from Israel, and I know what you mean about psy trance.
When I first listened to Electro Sun, I heard nonthing unusall but everyone here were so excited from him. I moved to another cd, same bassline sound and still it doesn't do anything.

I can't say that I heard something like my sound before so there you go.

Avatar are cool but they re-release old classic goa trance only. There are a few producers that still produce goa trance. For example: Ypsilon 5 and Filteria. Both Swedish producers. And both released their debute albums last year. Great stuff.

I didn't say trance is dead. I said trance has lost alot of the soul it once had. Today it's much more about the dj than the tunes he play.
Djs used to take risks and play various styles before. Today they stick to a formula they know will work for the moment.
Just remember when Oakenfold could go from goa into Vangelis and then into space brothers. Or when Sasha could play Breeder and then a fat breakbeat tune. Now he is more sleepy than anyone else.

that is so damn freeking true.. myself listens to other stuff.. like progressive and the likes.. but i still listen to trance, but its the older stuff that has my interest and some of the new M.I.K.E stuff..

but Armin, Tiesto, and Ferry.. hell NO!

For me, trance is all about breakdowns and buildups, like a wee orgasm in the middle of every tune. If what other people are calling trance these days isn't as good as it used to be, then who cares???Just listen to what you like! It's true that trance clubs don't get packed out in the way they used to - that's only because a lot of those people have gone and jumped on the hip-hop bandwagon. THere are still good DJs and producers - just go out find what you like (I like some of the uplifting/hard trance that comes over from Holland and Germany).

I can understand your problem with genre labelling - it's very arbitary and depends on people's interpretation. I tell people I like trance only cos it's easier than describing my tastes (which are eclectic by anyone's standards). If they interpret that as meaning that I like DJ Sammy then...whatever...I've got more important things to do that describe my musical tastes accurately to every person that asks. If it really matters what kind my tastes are (like if I'm in a record store) then I hand over a wants list. Or if someone has an interest in trance then I real off a list of producers/DJs/composers/bands/artists that I like.

I guess I've just accepted that genre labels are too arbitary to describe my own tastes so I might as well not bother.
