Guide for EDM noobs

I was thinking about not so long time ago and I was not able to discover by myself much good music. I came from other styles of non-EDM music and the only way to get more music was looking for the same artists, which generally finishes with:

a) Getting an enormous amount of crap.
b) Listen always to the same sound.

Because of this (I think) it would be a good idea to post here the "basic ones" in each genre. For example I'm tempted to listen to psy or hardtrance, but I cannot look for anything being sure that it's good. Same must happen to other people with prog, ambient, techno or anything like that.

I would make recommendations in 3 ways.

1. Artist (singles)
2. Livesets
3. CD's (mixed or not, don't mind)

For example in Uplifting trance my idea would be like:

1. Gouryella, M.I.K.E.-Push-Plastic Boy, Rank 1 (...)
2. Tiesto @ Energy 2000, PvD @ Energy 2003, Trance Energy sets.
3. Oakenfold - Tranceport, Gatecrasher Classics or Sven Vath - Accident in Paradise.

Greets..

Are genres really that important? Listen to music that is spoken highly of if you want to expand your tastes; worry about the genre later.

Look to the main forum.

Tiësto, PvD sucking in POD 2, some track comment "OMG - Choon!" and more..

Btw, if you, instead of getting trance at it's best, caught Dj Sammy or Scooter or (fill with another pseudotrance name) would you have been listening that anyway?

I mean, if I get crappy psy (or whatever..) probably will dislike it. But if, given a chance to try from some different ways, I get the "best-on-TA-people-opinion" maybe it will be more enjoyable, ain't?

In any case, this is what I think. And it's not the first time getting crap because of ignorance at choosing time.

Funny story...most people here wouldn't be listening to trance if they got it at its best. Haha. See? Rich.

you could just use the seach function to look for the genre you're interested in.

like psy-wise, you'll see a lot of people mentioning astrix, electric universe, human blue...

I find this guide more helpful and informative than ishkurs rantings:

http://www.ethnotechno.com/defs.php

some of the explanations contain info that kid here might not agree with, but in reality there are no definitions anywhere that kids here will not find something to disagree with.

This site is also a helpful guide:

http://www.plato.nl/e-primer/

but really the best guide is listening experience

The only differences between those guides and Ishkur's guide is that those claim to be the truth, they're less informative, and they're less accurate. At least in the parts of Hish's guide where he talks about the music and the history he has it right pretty much.

I much prefer www.ishkur.com

It is biased in some places, but he gives a pretty broad view of the music, and helps you find what you are looking for with the samples and whatnot.
