Question About Being a DJ

All my friends have been telling me I should be a DJ, I've been producing music for about a year. And now I am getting offers to be a DJ at clubs. Here is the problem. I am not a DJ! I don't have any equipment, and I know NOTHING about mixing or being a DJ, at all! I have never said anything about being a DJ, so I don't know why I am getting phone calls and emails from local and NYC clubs.

But I have been thinking maybe I should consider becoming a DJ. I am 17 years old (18 in a few weeks). Is now a good time to start buying equipment and learning how to use equipment? I know I can't just go to a club and become a DJ, I would have to do small parties and stuff. And I want to be strictly trance! And also, What are the basic things I should buy? And I am guessing having a job would help, I will have to get one at a retail store or something.

Well, basicly you need a 2ch mixer and 2 cd players or 2 turntables (if you want to use vinyl). You could get a decent setup for about 1000 USD. Then, it's all about practice. It could take years to become a good DJ, but you can learn the most important stuff like beatmatcing, phrase matching, eq-ing, in about one month. You'll need to know your tracks realy well too.

or you can try out ableton and use your laptop. Lots o people are bitching cause they think it is not real djing, but it is a dream for producers. you can layer tracks easier and run a multitude of effects, and all the while you don't ahve to learn the thing people bitch about the most...beat matching.

check it out.

You will not learn that in a month - you will learn how to do it or about the relevant subject but you wont be able to pull any of it off, an make it sound good for ages.

hard fact

Dude just do it your only 17. You have enough years to waste.

I think you should buy Pioneers CDJ's. This because since you say you are a producer you will learn the extra features this table have faster.

Just my thought!

I do! I've been really researching the past few days, and I think that interacting with the crowd would be a great experience! It's like being a politician, but without the corruption! The only thing I am afraid of is beat matching, from what everyone is saying, it must be hard. And I want to do vinyl since, because I would really like to keep the use of vinyl alive, since some DJ's have been switching to CD's.

This is great, I will buy one thing at a time, so it's gona take a while. I will still be glad to hear more suggestions, I am still in need!

that post soudned like you workded for pioneer,

but just cuz he is a producer hell benifit from the pios extra functions?? and im assuming u mean the cdj1000mk2, i just dont get it. there are lots of other players with more "features" and being a pridcer, he would most beinfit from something like ableton- The main advantage of the pio is the build quality and looping/scratching funtions.. but its not like only the pio has these features.

it just really didnt make a whole lot of sense

oh and +1 for vinyl.

No I was referring to Zabiela video's I saw. Zabiela was showing some cool tricks on these decks together with some other tool. It was a load of bla bla for me, but I thought if your producing and stuff. This should be a easy thing to get to know what these knobs do.

And man I would love to work for pioneer, not happy with the crappy work I'm doing now. They are happy with me but I don't like the damn company. So I will quit within a year. This also why i mentioned the wasted years, you have to try things out. Still being only 17 means you'll got enough time to find out what you really like to do. Just take the risks and explore.
