i am the owner of 2 Pioneer CDJ1000mk1's and one of them the platter is tighter than the other.

i was wondering if anyone has taken one to pieces to clean the platter, or knows were i can get some information.

I just bought the Pioneer CDJ 1000 MK2s and I have the same thing. It isn't so much a problem as it is just a minor inconvience, since both work fine, other than the fact that one is tighter than the other. I really wouldn't take it back or have it repaired for that though, just let the other one loosen up a bit with use or just get used to it. Other people have had the same complaints, and it appears that not one CDJ (or turntable for that matter) is made EXACTLY the same, no different than a car. The CDJ 1000 MK1's platter was supposed to be a little bit tighter anways than the CDJ 1000 MK2 (the CDJ 800 having the loosest). Like I said, I don't think it's worth taking it back unless it really affects the performance. Getting it repaired for this also might not be a good idea, as more damage could be done in repairs (and this had happened to one of my vinyl turntables when I had them).

To clean it, I just wipe it lightly with a cloth, but I wouldn't mess around too much with the platter or attempt to oil it, as it might cause damage. The Pioneer forums are a resource as other people have had similar tightness/looseness as I noted. The consensus seems to be like I posted earlier, that it takes some breaking in period.

Oh and do not attempt to remove the platter. It's not like a vinyl turntable where it is easily removable. You will damage it...the only person that should do this is a trained technician. Technically...the platters on the Pioneer CDJs aren't supposed to be removed anyways...

Okay this post is pretty much obsolete, however I want to add that the looser platter is better for scratching and the tighter one is better for pitch bending, however i'm sure the tighter one will become loose with time. It is just odd how this happens, like in the production they could purposely make some tighter and others looser, but really it just requires some getting used to I guess. Besides, in my case it's a month too late to exchange them and I guess you can't get everything perfect, something i've had to learn the hard way....

well, i stuck my neck out and pulled it to bits

not a easy task and i was sweating thinkin about putting it back together...

when i got it in pieces there appear to be something on the none firction surfaces that must of making its a little sticky...

i wiped this off, but it back together and now the platter is much better

Oh thats good, I won't even attempt to do that on mine. I just get used to each one having a slightly different feel. These were the only ones available when I bought them back in July, no other Guitar Center had them and I wouldn't spend that much money online ($2000), and figure that if I would wait and get another one that it could be worse...so I guess you just don't get perfect stuff for that much, even computers...all prone to problems, even this $4,000 (at the time) I have. I'de probably have a nervous breakdown taking it apart and putting it back together lol...
