Gaming / watching movies are often best enjoyed when haveing 4/5/6/7.1 surround, while mixing nomrally takes place on a set of high quality stereo monitors.
There's a difference in the way they sound. Of course, you get a very rich and good sound from the monitors alone, but I wouldn't recommend monitors only for movies/gaming.
I had a 5.1 surround set before, and I miss watching movies with it. Playing Splinter Cell 3 got boring without surround. So, think through your purchase thurouglhy.
If you're VERY serious about music production, buy a set of monitors. If not, buy a good surround system. Logitech has a couple of nice ones.
