Smoking ..umm..something First Time to be playing out!

... And I am scared shitless.

Basically what happened is this:

I personally know and am good friends with a bouncer at a club. He talked to the owner/promoter and I sent in a demo.
I then get a call from my friend who tells me they wanted to know if I mixed it live (ie with TT's) or using a computer because they thought the sound and the sound quality was too good. (Of course I mixed it live)Long story short, I have my first gig as a warm-up DJ on Oct. 15th at this small club in Toronto and am scared shitless.

I have not gone in yet and introduced myself, I am constantly scared I will 'screw up', I am constantly scared about picking the right tracks, as I haven't played out yet before, I have yet to learn about what 'reading a crowd' and set programming is. (I know WHAT they are, but I need to learn how to do them properly) Now I am constantly thinking about what to play on the night. I think I will have the set pre-planned because it is my first gig and I don't want to risk anything by messing up.

Anyone have any tips? I know there were threads like this before, but I need some encouragement and advice. Also I'm still pretty new to this scene, (young) so I'm having trouble finding a few people to support me at the club that night. The only person I know who will be there will be my bouncer friend, and maybe 1 other aquaintance. I also have some banging tunes that I'd like to play for my warm up set (they are still slower tempos 125-130 BPM) and was wondering if it would be OK to include these in my set.

Sorry for the long post. (First one by the way) I've been a long time lurker though!

Any advice, suggestions appreciated.

Did I mention I was scared shitless?

people usually get to clubs at 11ish anyways so you won't really need to read the crowd too much because there won't be many people. I remember the first time i did an event. I was shaking when i would place the needle down i scratch the record because i was shaking so much. Don't worry though once you hit your first mix you gain confidence and most likely you are good anyways and got hired because of it. If he didn't like the way you spun or whatever then he woulda never hired you. just don't blow up with awesome tunes in your set because you may likely ruin it for the guy coming after you. if trance is being played then those 125-130 tunes should be perfect since the primary dj will likely play 135-140 bpm tunes. don't sweat it you are a natural

Awesome man, I feel really happy for you. Congrats!

Good luck on your set, I'm sure you will do fine mang! Don't worry about it, in fact. Don't think you will screw up or anything, come in with a postitive attitude. I wish I could say more to you but I can't, but I can see this having alot of replies very soon...

Good luck and don't forget to tell us how it went!

make sure you ask the guy who goes after you if he wants you to give him a fast or slow song to mix into. he may want to start his part off with a 145 bpm song and if you give him 130 bpm then there will be problems.

Hey man congrats, don't worry so much, you will do fine, if you mess up a couple its no big deal, it happens to EVERYONE, just go in there with a positive attitude and HAVE FUN, that is the most important thing to laying down a good set IMO, there is nothing wrong with preprogramming your set for your first time, you don't know what to expect, you don't know the crowd, just play what YOU want and you will start to understand how to read the crowd, then you might end up not playing the rest of your planned tracks and end up playing what you think the crowd will better react to, just be sure not to play anthem after anthem, also like said talk to the DJ whos spinning after you, and find out what he wants to do, this is a good way to help out the next DJ, and maybe he will help you get more gigs and shit as you seem like a good guy, anyway just have fun man, you'll do great, just be sure to tell us how it went and DON'T GET DRUNK.

Thanks, brothers.

Yea, I was this close ( > < ) to playing anthem after anthem (or at least popular tracks, bt I guess I'll be putting some more underground things in there. (Like DannyO has mentioned)

However what if the DJ shows up near the end of my set? (Most likely I'll try to work it to a 135-140 range) But if he shows up near the end and says he would like 140 bmp (for example) but I'm still at 130 (again, hypothetically) then what?

It is very wierd though. About a month and a half ago when I was mixing with my two crappy Stanton str8-30's my mixing was decent, but nothing to be gloating about, then when I saved up fr my first Technic 1200 It improved but was still off (due to one good deck, and the other being crap), when I got my second.. then BAM!, my beatmatching (and mixing) is usually spot on, I'm beatmatching in 30 s or less (as opposed to 1 min when I had the cheaper decks), and I got my first gig. IT happened so fast.

I thought I still had a good half a year to practice before I could play out. Looks like I was hard on myself.

Thanks for the advice again, I'll keep you posted after Oct. 15

And if anyone has more to say, feel free.

About the BPM thing, try and find out before the end of your set what he wants, as if he only comes up to you on your last track and says he wants to mix a 140mpb tune on, well you ain't gonna be able to change that pitch without it sounding like shit, so try and find out beforehand, then you can plan out how your going to increase the tunes over the period of time you have.
