Anyone in the AUS forum bought mp3s from these sites, or others? If so, how much does it usually cost for a single track? Have you had any problems with the service etc...?

Regards

Yeah I buy from there all the time. Tracks vary from about $2-$4 each for back catalogue stuff to new releases to exclusives.

Other than a handful of things, I have stopped buying vinyl pretty much. I use Beatport, EDM, 3Beat and Kompakt's digital site for digital downloads, and I have never had a problem with any of them. In fact once i bought a track from EDM that they emailed all those who had bought it the next week to say that there was another copy waiting to be downloaded because they had found a 'pop' in a section of the track.

Costs vary but are usually around $2 US for a track (EDM gives you different prices for different bit rates from 192 through to 320 and then losless FLAC files). 3 Beat is the most expensive at around BP2.99 (which is about AU$7 i think?) however they have exclusive deals with some of my favourite labels so it's the only place you can get their stuff.

Bacially you can listen to samples of the tracks (usually pretty long ones) and select them to your 'shopping cart'. Once you have paid for them via credit card they become available for download in your 'downloads' page. A couple of the sites give you multiple downloads, some don't (although if there is a problem downloading it you can simply email them with your purchase number) and any Kompakt purchases that you make get downloaded together all in a .zip archive.

I find that most things are generally released digitally at the same time they are released on vinyl these days (3 Beat stagger them, but i honestly don't think they'll be doing that for much longer).

Hope that helps

yeh i hate how 3beat do that, that's why i never buy off them. However Beatport & EDM are wicked. They allow me to buy so many different styles now because it's so cheap.

I have a feeling digital download prices will slowly rise in the next 12-18 months. They're probably a little too cheap at the moment if you think about it. I reckon AU$5 a track is probably more around where it should be (from an artists point of view anyway).

not too sure where prices are headed, some stuff on audiojelly is up to GBP 2.40 per track. that's more for a download than you pay for a single with 5 mixes on it in store. Sure, you can't find as good a range in stores, but with prices going nuts, people are going to go straight back to sharing these tracks, and download services will lose money.

Keeping prices under 2 pounds a track makes it good value. I can't see artists not doing ok out of this, it's still a lot more per track, with far less costs involved. If artists still aren't happy they can run their own service directly.

twas fun last week having some friends over to spin for a bit, they raved about some new tune. Within 5 minutes we'd found it at beatport, bought, d/l'd, burnt and were playing it. very convenient.

yeah ive spent more money on downloads than vinyl recently and gotten about 8x as much music - i think seeing Dean at vaccine with about 13 billion cd's on him helped to sway me
