So how many digital download places are plagued by 'territoral bullsh1t'?

Ok I'm pissed.

So I go along to Beatport wanting to buy PvDs remix of Say Hello. Flaming aside, Im quite fond of it and havent heard it that much so to me, the track hasnt been raped, regardless of what others think.

Anyway. I try to buy it. "Territorial error. The following Tracks are not available in your territory:
Say Hello"

Looking at the list, that entire vinyl release is unavailable to me. It wont let me buy it. Why? What the fuck? I do know my IP address sometimes makes it look like Im based in the US, but a Ministry release not being available? What utter crap.

You know, its pedantic bullshit like this that is ruining the industry. Not mp3 downloads. Here you have a customer that is quite willing to shell out his $1.99 equivalent for a track, but cant because of some stupid bullshit licencing thing. It really would serve the record companies right if I went on the filesharers and downloaded it. Would teach them a lesson - but Im not cos I dont download singles.

Anyone else feel this whole thing is stupid?

I can understand doing it terrirorially if certain markets have to wait longer for a certain release, but not making it available worldwide (even at a premium) isn't exactly fair. Another case in point is

Above & Beyond - No One On Earth (Chill Out Mix)

When I saw that on Beatport, I freaked and instantly tried to buy it, but I'm not in the right territory. It was released last year! Why shouldn't I be able to get it now?

If anyone has more insight to this, I'd appreciate it.

That hasnt happened to me on Beatport yet, and hopefully it wont. Thats pretty stupid that it wont let you buy it. My advice is to "obtain" it using other means

...why you get territorial errors

The reason is because different labels might carry the same track but in different areas. Eg. Say Hello is on Ministry of Sound in the UK, but is carried in north america by positiva and on deep dish's own label. So ministry of sound is legally not allowed to sell the record in the US, just as Positiva can't ship out the record to the UK, because then they would be stepping on MoS's feet.

The problem is not beatport, but the labels themselves. I feel you pain because i too tried downloading Flash Brothers - Amen off beatport, but ran into the stupid territorial BS. Ended up getting it through other, less desirable channels..

Audiojelly works out as being about twice the price with the exchange rate.

$1.99 = €1.63 - Beatport
£1.99 = €2.90 - Audiojelly

But what REALLY annoys me is that because my IP address (which I cant change) lies within a range flagged as American, I cant buy the track, even though I am LEGALLY ENTITLED TO. This is all despite the fact that I have myself listed as "Republic of Ireland" in my account settings.

Crazy.

Think Audiojelly is one of the best designed download sites. Hate the way Beatport has been designed all in flash.

Pressing the back button drives me nuts on Beatport But in the end they're cheaper, so Id use them over Audiojellys nice interface

I hear you. I had the same problem with Beatport, having a UK IP address

I ended up buying the CD single I wanted from Amazon, turned out a bit more expensive but a lot less annoying...
