Germany Got a New Chancellor, Finally
| quote: | Merkel 'to be German chancellor'
Angela Merkel's party won a narrow victory in last month's poll
Germany's Social Democrats have agreed that conservative Christian Democrat (CDU) leader Angela Merkel will become chancellor, German media report.
The agreement was reported by the German news agency DPA and ZDF television, with no further details.
The question of who would lead a new government has dogged talks between the main parties since they began.
Both Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and Mrs Merkel laid claim to the post after a tight election on 18 September.
Further coalition talks between the two parties are being held Monday to resolve the post-election political deadlock.
The two parties have held three rounds of what they called exploratory talks.
Even if agreement has been reached, it will only be the start of a lengthy and more detailed negotiation on the small print of future government policy, the BBC's Ray Furlong reports.
It all suggests just how difficult it might be for a grand coalition of the conservatives and Social Democrats to govern Germany if it is indeed formed as anticipated. |
Good news, even tho Germany still has a tough road ahead of it...
