You can apply to Stern, got nothing to lose and everything to win. I would recommend Columbia, but if you're not getting into Stern there's no way you're getting into Columbia unless you get lucky or have connections. Pace sucks and so does Baruch. Baruch used to be better.

also, I believe most b-school's require (or at least recommend) 2-3 years of relevant work experience

Average B-school age is something like 27 although it's mostly 26 year olds and a few older folks. So, it's more like people have 4 years of experience before they go to b-school although the age is dropping these days.

Grades are't that high for B-schools. I think the average GPA at the top schools is something like 3.5 so we're not talking medschool numbers here. The GMAT scores are pretty high for the top New York schools though - you'll probably need something like a 700 to stand a chance of getting into Columbia with and something a bit lower to be competitive at Stern.

GPA's in graduate school admittance don't tell you anything because they weigh them differently according to the college you went to. So a 2.7 from Yale is still better than a 3.8 from Southwest Missouri State. So then main thing that matters is the GMAT, (or LSAT, MCAT) etc. So as long as you are in the some basic ballpark( like you didn't get a 2.1, or you didn't get a 4.0 either) you have to do well on the standardized test. If you can afford it, take Kaplan. The 1000 dollars you spend now on a course like Kaplan will pay off later if it gets you into a better business school and your starting sallary is $20,000 more.
