a music production only Windows XP Partition

Right now I have two boot partitions:

An Old win98 partition and a Win XP partition.

1. Can I add a thrird partition with Win XP installed (where I will
install all my audio software)

2. How can I add a thrird partition with Win XP installed? What software do I need? Or do I just have to install XP on another partition?

Thanks for your help

You can do whatever you want, but the only way to repartition a disk without wiping it out is to get a program like Partition Magic or Acronis Disk Director.

You can partition and boot different versions of XP if you have the XP CD.

Just go into your BIOS, set the first boot device to CD-ROM, put the XP CD in your drive, and press reset!

Once you boot from the CD there's an option to create more partions, and install windows. You can even have multiple versions of XP installed on the same partition, tho you'll get promted everytime which operating system you want to boot from during startup.

Partitioning from the XP setup CD requires you to delete the existing partitions (i.e. erase all your data).

I say use Partition Magic to partition your hard drive. Last time I used it though it totally messed up my partition tables, but that was only one time out of like 6 that I’ve tried. If you have the money, go ahead and just buy a 7200rpm like 40GB SATA HD (Serial ATA only if you motherboard supports it). It’ll be worth it because not only is SATA faster than IDE so you can render those tracks faster, but if you run off an existing HD it’ll just bog down your system a little more especially when you have another OS on it like Windows XP. 40GB HD are only about $30 or so too. Otherwise just buy a 140-160GB one for like $80. Partition the drive if you like, but do it at your own risk. Either way is fine just another HD is faster.
