you could make cracking tracks in reason alone.
pro tools is kind of pointless unless you have the hardware and are going to do live recording. live is a pretty awesome digital audio workstation geared towards live mixes but synth wise you'll need to buy a few of your own separately. same with acid i think. soundforge is pretty much all you need for maintaing, treating, cutting up wavs and such.
although yea, thats way too much of a learning curve to junk on 1 person who doesnt know anything about production.
really you only need a copy of reason and that'll have you sorted for years as long as the interest and desire to get better is there.
