i'd go with the second question
it is more concrete and fairly narrowed down
make sure to also include any critique you may find on pvd, not just the great things he's done for trance. it's important to show that you're being critical in your essay, not just fanatical. talk about what he has not done, what he could have done differently and what has he done wrong. what were his ups and downs.
pvd definately isnt the father of trance, but he did play an important role in helping it grow to what the music is today. look at his interaction with other djs, what has he said about tiesto, oakenfold, sasha and the new guys like jon o'bir, niklas harding, andy moor.
i believe pvd writes a monthly column in mixmag, but i dont know if that would help you out much. try mixmag and djmag websites, they might have stuff archived on him. actually there was an article on pvd in the august issue of mixmag but i think it was a global gathering special of some sort that they were running on erick morillo, pvd, sasha and karl hyde. check it out nonetheless. if you absolutely cant find the issue anywhere, i've got it, drop me a pm, i'll take a photo of the page or something or scan it, or type it out if i'm really bored hehe
one of the most important elements in any paper is being critical about your topic and demonstrate your objectivity on the subject even if you're trying to argue a certain point. i can see that getting lost when you're writing about something or someone you're really passionate about.
hope this helps
