What's the deal?

Michelle Leslie with extacy in bali.

This may get a bit contraversial, but it just seems a bit awry.

I just find it a bit strange with what has gone on with her case? I know we probably get a bit of a creatively journalised version of it but what's going on?

First the prosecuters call for the maximum sentence of 15 years
Media mob taunted Leslie

Obviously, she tries to make excuses
Model's defence to call Bali drug expert
Leslie's friends slipped drug net

Then there seems to be controversy with the police
Leslie's hopes lifted by holes in police case
Leslie cover up 'a matter for police'

And controversy with a big Indonesian figure possibly to be implacated
Minister denies link to Leslie

Then all of a sudden the charges are dropped and they pretty much say "oh, well then in that case, nevermind"?
Leslie back in court today
Model hopes for freedom
Optimistic Leslie arrives at court
Leslie verdict set to be handed down

I mean come on, what's going on?

Just because there's possible links to a indonesian big-wig there's all of a sudden a reason for them to go, "ok, yeah in that case, we believe you about your mysterious friend, run along..."?

I'm sorry, but, what? I want to know why have the prosecution all of a sudden dropped the charges?

TA Disclaimer: By the way, I'm not having a go at any culture and in no way do I intend to sound racist, I'm just curious.

It's typical in South-East Asian countries for prosecution to push for the maximum with regards to drugs. This seems to be to deter would-be traffickers and has always been the case in many countries of the region. They did so in this case, but later reduced their demands with regards to sentencing at least. Prosecutors in any jurisdiction tend to drop or lower charges when they think their chances of proving the more onerous offence are no longer good. This could come about because of new evidence adduced or simply the reaction of the decision maker (judge or jury). Whether her chances increased because she paid someone off (which is probably not an uncommon pracice in Indonesian and South-East Asian Justice systems) is anyone's guess... though possibly the likelihood of corruption being a factor is slightly lessened because of the high profile of the case
