I should be buying some new hardware soon, anyway you regurally hear about the best hardware for pads etc, but what for bass?, i had a look at the hardware synths thread in the tutorial list, and there is mentioned the dx7, but its fm synth.

Do pros use the dx7?, or what?, also some samples of tracks you know what synth they used would be cool

Lots of pros use FM synths for bass....check out the track "Airwave" from Rank 1....that was a preset from a TX81Z(yeah I got one)....there's lots of tracks out there that use FM bass.

a lot of basses come from fm synthesis.. but the dx7 is a bit tricky to program.

there are other fm synths (yamaha fs1r (armin uses this), ...)

but you can do some wicked basses in the standard subtractive synths too (like access virus, ..)

Alphazone uses the Novation Bass Station, I believe.

i always thought digital synths were inferior at creating bass than genuine analogue monos. rig up a pro-one straight into a mixing desk. no effects and send it out at 120 dB and thats the sound of something special.

to my mind, no digital recreation has ever been able to recreate something like that.

Hey. Ok, well let me put it to you this way. Yamaha killed analog with its DX7 and then Roland shot back, killing the DX7 with the D-50 and then Korg came back and bitch slapped them all with the M-1. Take that however you want . In my honest opinion, I'd highly recomend getting a 76-key controller and getting FM7 before I'd recomend a DX7. Its really nice to have hardware and it always makes you feel nice :P, but FM7 really improves greatly on the DX7 with all the FX that it comes with. The DX7 on the other hand... FXless. Any three of those keyboards would be great bass pumping machines, but this is as long as you are looking for the digital sound. Some of the best bass sounds coming from analogs have been from Oberheim, Moog, Yamaha and Korg. In the end, its still all in how you program it and process it.

For me, I'm a software person and the VB-1 synth does it for me (also found in cubase). It is a one trick pony. Only find it good for nice deep sub basses

Some other softsynths worth mentioning for bass:

Triangle II: I use this to make rolling basslines (free)

Atmosphere: Has some great patches for those deep probspot type basslines. (around 400$ i think)

Claw: This synth (only about 20$ i believe) is good mainly for mid-ranged edgy type bass

ppd tritium: Layering this with another bass will give it a nice hi-end boost and a nice bite to it. It's free, really simple to use, and a one-trick pony basically.

You may want to try the Yamaha DX200 for basses (bass programming from your armchair). It has the synthesis power of the DX7 with a knobby interface. It also comes with a software editor and has a built-in 16 step sequencer. They're about $200 on ebay.

like I said in my first post the Yamaha TX81Z is used a lot and guess what? you can pick it up for like $80 if your lucky. Got mine for $100 and nothing can come close to it for some bass's you can get out of it. I compared FM7 to the TX with the same patches(u can load DX7 patches in to the TX) and the Hardware had a lot more boom than the FM7.
