Creating funky house

Hey all,

I produce house music, and more recently am looking to create some funky house styles of house music.
However, i am kind of stuck with how to create the sounds that are common in house music in general.

I am aware a lot of the sounds in house music are created on real instruments.. ie bass guitar, pianos, etc..

But does anyone know what sort of synths, type of waves, and/or effects that can be used to give the really warm, analogue sound that you need for (funky) house music.. Specific answers would really be appreciated

Thanks all

I would try some samples bass guitars and electric guitars (and modulate them as hell) so noone can actually hear they are samples...bla bla...

you might incorporate some sine waves and heavily filtered saws...

I believe it's up to your fantasy, isn¡'t it?

Synth organ, guitar riff (wah-wah pedal necessary), syncopated bassline, acoustic drumkit, some jazzy vocals and harmonies, etc.

Most VST softsynths will do the trick, z3ta included. I'd get a decent sampler, too, and if you have loads of cash, Tascam Giga Studio for the guitar and bass sampling.

Well, whether you like it or not doesn't change the fact that it's an incredibly powerful tool. You WILL not find an easier way to replicate real-world instruments. With the VST plug-in, it's not too hard to use, anyway.

Many film studios use Giga instead of hiring a professional orchestra, and with enough tweaking, even seasoned musicians can hardly tell that it's sampled.

Hey. I dont think I'd ever recomend any version of GigaStudio that Tascam has had thier fingers in. Since Tascam took over, Gigastudio has sucked more and more with every update. Seriously dont even think of buying it unless you KNOW your computer will work with it. Thier techsupport is non-existance, thier diverse compatibility is no where to be seen and the program just doesnt live up to its hype. There are way better, cheaper samplers that can load gigasampler packs without the hassle of just getting the sampler up and running. I'd recomend VSampler . It opens up just about any sample pack including SoundFonts, GigaSampler packs, HALion, Kontakt, Rex, and Akai plus some others as well. I find VSampler to be the best sampler out their because of its support of pretty much every popular sampler format and its ease of use. Plus, its only $178 compared to ~$350 for a sampler that will only load wav files and GigaSampler packs.

Cheers,
Zac

I've been using Giga since its conception on multiple machines and in some cases in multiple instances. It's a bit of a resource hog, yes, but its control and expansibility in simulating real-world instrumentation and orchestration is unparalleled in the market. I've had no problems with errors or twitchiness in my time using it.

Where I -have- had problems is using .gig files with foreign samplers like Halion, sometimes producing bizarre and grotesque effects, sometimes even corrupting the .gig files themselves. I've found that .gig files are best suited to Giga.

Giga Studio 3 Orchestra is a perfectly reliable piece of software; reliable enough that Robert Rodriguez and Troublemaker studios do all of their orchestration with it. A large number of commercial composers of orchestral music perform a dry run with Giga and a sequencer before the final print.

I'm not sure where you guys have had any problems with Giga; perhaps they've been rectified in the most recent version. If you've ever heard the Voices of the Apocalypse choir simulations, you may be willing to put up with whatever problems you've had using the software, because they are simply awe-inspiring.

^ i've used VOTA and its a great library, but its unfortunate i couldn't use the word editing program (because i need a dedicated gigastudio soundcard apparently???) i don't understand why a program would need a propritary soundcard. the thing i hate to is i use cubase as my sequencer, it is so much neater having kontakt open as a vst rather then contect through rewire. and i've never had problems with kontakt, which also loads any existable format. I'm a film composer myself, maybe i'd appreciate gigastudio more if i was more experienced with it, but i only have 1gb of ram, so it doesn't take much b4 my computer runs dry.

Conceded- the proprietary soundcard thing is bullshit. I do have one, though, but the word-formation prog has a bit of a steep learning curve and I've never quite gotten the hang of it.

Glad to see another film-music guy on here. Represent.

^ yeh totally man, definatly not a usual find on a trance forum but i'm a trained musician, and if i was only a trance producer, that wouldn't do justice to my musical skills. currently i'm composing music for a documentary and the highlight of my studio is 'East west symphonic library Silver' an amazing library, and i'm hoping to eventually afford the gold.

I've got Garritan's string library. And people complain about spending 200 bucks on softsynths...
