Essential Dance 2000
I was reading the other thread about how to get your friends to like EDM and it made me start to think how I first got into EDM......
I was 14 years old and I was up late one night watching MTV or something. Before this age I had never been introduced to electronica so it was totally foreign to me. Anyways, I was watching the tube when all of a sudden a massive amount of people appeared on the tv, all of them were in a club. That picture alone got my attention. Then i heard music that started to get my head rocking. Before I knew it I was totally into the tv commercial. It was a tv commercial for Dj Skribble's Essential Break 2000 cd. After being that moved by the music/club scene I HAD to get the cd. So I gathered up some money and went out to buy the CD. I LOVED the CD. I would listen to it with my headphones on and never when I was around my friends. For some reason I was embarassed to say that I was listening to what most in my area thought as "gay" music. So about a year and a half passed and it was still the only EDM cd i owned.
Being that no one I knew was into EDM I kinda stopped listening to it and started to get more into early Thrice/Thursday stuff.........
Then one day I was searching the web and I came across the website: di.fm. Lets just say that this station totally changed the way I viewed music. EDM is basically the only style I listen to now with the exception of some harder punk and the occasional Coldplay.
Looking back on it: The Essential Dance cd really sucked.....some of the toons were pretty good and I still bring it out for old time sakes but the mixing was terrible.
Here is the point of this thread. I cant make my friends like EDM. People should try not to force trance/house/etc down other peoples throats. For one to seriously enjoy it themselves they must do some exploring on their owns. Another issue this brought up. I am pretty tired of seeing all the newbs get made fun of for saying they like Tiesto, Oakenfold, etc....cause i bet that most of you (like me) first got into EDM by hearing a mainstream DJ on the radio or tv. Thats all
