Review: Swan Lake @ Hummingbird Centre

It's always nice to get dressed up and do something like this every once in a while. As for the review, wow I must say it was a MAD dash getting there. Traffic getting downtown from North York is always bad, but my goodness it was awful last night. Got there just as they were calling to take our seats!!

As for the ballet -- well what can I say, it's ballet! The principal male dancer (Siefried) actually screwed up a few times in the first act. Not being able do a proper landing, either having to do a second hop, or reacatching his footing. Anyways safe to say after intermission he got it together. The principle female dancer (Odette) was just great, graceful and beautiful, but at times she lacked emotion (You could just tell ;-)). Orchestra was grand but seriously I hate the Hummingbird centre we definitely need much better space in toronto. Should be interesting what the new COC building will look on the inside.

Rounded off the night by heading to Republik to celebrate a friends b-day. Hats off to Republik bouncers, they let our 12 strong group in bypassing the line.

Love

Swan Lake is my all time favorite ballet.

I saw it a couple of years ago with Rex Harrington before his retirement. I basically just watched him the entire night, so so beautiful. No one compares to my Rex.

that's so funny I had a friend of mine who studied to be a dancer refer to Rex as an old washed up hack.. love the different opinions.

Glad you had a wicked time Beh. Never been to a ballet but one of these days I'm thinking of catching an opera. I'm more into symphonies myself but I figure I try and opera once.

LOL really? I've got a good amount of dance training under my belt aswell and I adore him. He may have aged but ive got alot of respect for what he once was. He was a fucking queen diva though thats for sure!

lol yeah, but I think he meant more nowadays rather then how Rex was in the past.

Kurfuw!! yah! -- gotta get out there do something different. My fav opera is Madame Butterfly. Saw it at the Bass Music Hall in Fortworth Texas. Wow now thats an impressive space! I'll let you know next time I do something, i'm thinking next will be an opera too, but likely when the COC building is finished.

Nice man! That's the building on queen and university no? Apparently the entire foundation is built on RUBBER to shield it from downtown vibration...badass.

hehe...when i was in summer dance school way back when at the royal winnipeg ballet, rex was there rehearsing to perform with evelyn hart and my friend and i were all joking and going "ooooooh rex, he's so dreamy" AND then he walked by and heard us and started laughing.

i am going to see "jewels" in february. i can't wait, it's my favourite ballet ever. i adore balanchine. would be nice to see swan lake again too, though.

i would defo like to check out an opera but i think when i do, it'll be something by opera atalier.

Out of curiosity, were there any kids performing in it?

My Aunts, Uncles and cousins love boasting about their prodigy children, my second cousins (uuuurgggh), and they mentioned that the oldest was in Swan Lake.

I just don't know if it was at the Hummingbird Center or not. :|

Last time I went to a ballet, I can't even remember what it was. Bored me to death so I vowed never to return. I want to catch Lord of the Rings, though. (yeah, I know it's not ballet but you know what I mean...this elegant...stuff)
