Reason for this is i love hearing war stories or just stories from servicemen. I used to listen to my grandad for hours talk about WW2. I just find it really interesting.  |
ok since this thread is directly aimed at me ill give my sense of my 2 cents since (ok that doesnt really make much sense but i wanted to do it anyway.  )..
training = basic training? officer candidacy school? or my field artillery officer basic course?
basic just about everybody has to do it execpt for ROTC officers and West Pointers... but its just that.. the basics... its main goal is to break you down and then bring you back up making you think you are a hard core fighter.. and teaches you to not talk back and to follow orders... the gas chamber was 1 morning of 9 weeks during basic... the only part that made it suck was that we just finished some obstacle course and i had sand all in my shirt and butt crack and shit adn sweating like crazy and then i get to breathe that lovely goodness...but its true that they made me lift my mask and state my full name, social security number, and my full unit... by doing so it assures them that you had to take a breath while you just spoke... no big deal.. snot absolutly pouring out of your nose and crying, well not actual crying, but tears just pouring down your face... so basically every oraface in your head is spewing out fluids.. 2 weeks of rifle shit... and other misc crap
OCS (officer candidate school) made basic training seem like a walk in the park... they didnt "smoke" us once,.. not one time... it was all mental games and no sleep... and absurd tasks that were near impossible to do.. and the fun 2 weeks of land navigation...
FAOBC (field artillery officer basic course) was like college... partied my ass off.. but the academics were extremely hard... harder than my degree at university actually... but i was already an officer at this point.. and they treated us as such... no BS and no mind games... just pass... that was hard enough
the hardest thing i can remember was during a field operation excersise during OCS.. off of like maybe 90 minutes sleep the past 2 nights and being woken up to move our entire camp like frickin a mile down the road b/c the TACs (our instructers) wanted to make us overcome hellish conditions.... after 3 days of this your brain can hardly figure out simple tasks...
best moment in my career will be in Jan. when i finally get to come home from a year in iraq... everybody thinks of course b/c of the bullets and road bombs (IEDs) but its not.. its not getting a day off (well even not showing up for work is technically a day off, but im still in iraq so it still sucks), not seeing friends, not going to clubs, no girls, no alcohol, same people day in and day out....
there hasnt really been a definitive best moment in my career so far, but earlier this year being able to fire artillery here in a combat zone and knowing i was responsible for more artillery called than anybody else in theather(the army term for the iraq, kuwait, saudi, etc..area) during that time frame..
You are totally right about Army stories... ive only been in about 2.5 years but i already have zillions...
