Couple of quick Q's about mixing

i was just wondering how you guys mix. do some of you concentrate on fading into the next track smoothly, or do you constantly have 2 records playing at once. I am getting better at beatmatching, but it just doesnt sound good to me. I've just been constantly playing 2 records together just for beatmatching practice, but It seems like the tracks peak at different times and drop off at different times and it just sounds like shit. When mixing, what percentage of the time do you guys actually have 2 records cued and playing at the same time (%).

it is also very obvious when i turn the bass/mid/treble volumes up and down.

I'd love to see some videos of DJ's spinning... is there any that i could download on the internet that might help me out?

Any suggestions are welcome.

i'm gonna go keep practicing...

thanks,
bisco

On building a set, if this means smooth mixes, or lots of chopping and crziness, so be it..

Just putting together a bit of a journey.

Lightbulb Mixing

Well, when I mix it depends on what the tracks sound like. If I hear that that the 2 songs can be played together (of course using headphones) than I'll smoothly fade the song that is not playing in, and have the two songs playing together. I also use Eq a lot. Cute some frequencies out and then fade some inn... You get the Ide.?

Sometimes when the to songs don't match at all (happens sometimes) I just quickly switch songs when the one which is playing comes to a drop point or something like that

Bad english

Dunno bout videos people spinning (check dmc championship archives?), but i think i figured out what i was trying to say in a less ghey way.

When you drop one track, dont just think about the track you are going to drop after that that, but the track after that track, and after that track possibly..

Im not saying plan out all your mixes, it isnt a battle between you and your records, its a collaboration.. i think sometimes people get so scared of the enxt track their set vision gets blurry and the guy who isnt thinking is gonna dig a hole, possible lose the vibe, energy, etc, or run out of tracks...

Set/Tunnel Vision, like someone said, Bullet time in the Matrix

Feel out your set and understand the direction you want it to take and have the tunes to take it there.

(This is why 3+ deck setups rock, it allows you to take it there.)

this is how to start from scratch.

lets say track A and B. A is playing, and you selected B to mix with it in the end. first, these 2 songs must be able to mix, same structure or close, similar sounds... u know that part.

set the correct tempo for B by listening to ur headphones. now that you got it, get it at the right cue.u should get the right spot cued where it will blend smoothly with track A.

now that uve done that, try to EQ track B as close u can to track A, so when mixing the effects and sounds dont sound weird.

now ur ready to mix, wait for the sweet spot for track A, and when it gets there, play track B in ur headphones, start beatmatching, and from there u do what you do.

i mix as long as 1-1:30 minutes before a complete transition, but each song is different. and the longer you can listen to a track in ur headphones to beatmatch and that before starting to fade, better it is, but some songs you cant cz u want to start mixing from the beginning of the track..

Hey Bisco,

You can do that, if you get tracks that are in key and have a similar structure, after that it comes down to your skill with the eq. when I spin I do perform live mashups from time to time if there is something that I have found during the week that works well.
That's takes years to get right though so be prepared to practice more especially when mixing a tune on a third deck into your mashup.

But no, it's not necessary to have two tunes playing at the same time the whole time.

Cheers
Nem

check out www.edmm.ca

There are videos.. the mixer is a Xone V6 and it doesn't really work like a normal mixer as it as a single eq, but you'll see how they do their transition between tracks.
