i've been doing some mixing on a Traktor 2.6 using mp3s (192-320). at the beginning of Jan i'm going to get a Numark DM1050 and connect it to my 4.1 soundcard (mixing using real faders and knobs is easier)

very recently i've been very unsatisfied with the transitions in my mixes. i've learned to beatmatch pretty good but i've been analizing the problems and here's what i've come up with:
1. the arriving track seems more quite after the outgoing track is totally muted
2.the arriving track seems to have less bass (less punchy drums) than the outgoing track
3.the mid-tones (melodie etc) of both tracks mix up and create a mess

so, here's the question - How should EQs, gains and ch-faders be used wisely in order for the mix to sound great, smooth and without glitches, roughness and sudden volume changes (the last one is killing me)

i wanna make it sound like ASOT 2004(2cd)

Hi man now that you adjusted/fine tuned your beatmatching you have to learn to phrase match that help you alot with num. 3.
1 and 2 you need to start Eqing.
It'll take a while but it'll pay off look at dyno he's 16 and when you listen to his mixes you like they grow up so fast lol

mixing for every song is different.

depending on the song try the following combination:

Hi - Keep at 100%
Mid - 50%
Low - 10-15%

as you turn up the volume on the channel, turn the hi down on the outgoing track until its at 50%.
then work in the mid nice and slowly turning it up to 100% and the other to about 50%.
finally, work the low up very slowly and the other down, when the start of a new phrase arrives, swap the bass over.

again i cant stress this will not sound good for every 2 songs but it should work for a fair share.

1. Learn to use the gain controler, it's one of your best friends and will make the matching of volumes a lot eaier. There should be a point in your mix when you make the switch and make the incomming track more dominant in your mix. If you are using the gains then it's easier to control than using the up faders.

2. Could be a couple of factors here.As you are working with the MP3 format you may have some lower quality than others. MP3 has a notorious habbit of draining the bass especially when heard on a big system (some notice it more than others).
It may also be track selection, simply the track you chose to mix just wasn't suitable for the outgoing track.
Or bad EQ, sometimes you need to compensate for tracks that are a little bass deficient on their final master.

3. When it comes to Eq I seldom mess with anything other than the Bass. I will only tamper with the high or mid if there is a sound in the outgoing track that I want to keep for a while.
What you describe also sounds like key clashes or just bad placement of the mix. You need to learn when to mix and which tunes go well with eachother.

Basstard's method can also work but it may vary depending on the mixer.
In my own opinion however I tend to find that when you mess with the mid you can make the mix sound a little thin, and doesn't give anything to the over all mix... as I said, in my opinion.

that's exactly how i started...

including the exact same mixer...

IMHO, it's better to have the highs/lows/mids of both tracks perfectly level with one another, before mixing out.

also, try to get tracks with similiar keys....

to put that a little bit more simply, just try to get tracks that have similiar bass, mids, and trebble.


Bassturd's method is great if ur trying to replicate ASOT 2004

I personally use the 1/4 fader technique That I self taught. In general, on the breakdown of the outgoing track, I drop a 1/4 + litle on the next track. NExt 8 bars, I push one more quarter (50% now) and start equing (swapping basses and adjusting to avoid the phasing or bass Echo as they call it), this is where the melody of the incoming track starts to get into listeners brain unintentionally. Final 8 bars, 75% on the fader or so depending on the songs and melodies, the outgoing song dies slowly while new one gets brought up.
I started practicing with softwares like VDJ for long time and I recommend if u stil in traktor to try using keyboard config or some controller like numark. Just practice over and over.

wat are you doing to the outgoing track while raising the new track?
