Arrow Looking for some GOOD films

So i am sick and tired of watching Hollywood style films with James Bond style explosions, American Pie style 'you always get the girl' and Lion King style 'Always a happy fucking ending'.

Could you pleases recommend me some good films with a solid story and decent acting. Films like Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile, One Flew Over the Cookoos Nest, Gladiator, The Godfather...

This thread can also double up as a thread to see if there is anyone else like me who grown bored of watching the Spiderman and War of the Worlds type crap that is getting released far too often.

Thanks

Pete

PS I'm also sick and tired of hearing british people calling films 'movies'. You don't call a path 'the sidewalk' so why call a film a 'movie'?

I thought Batman Begins was cracking good, one of the best I've seen this year

I heart Huckabees? I enjoyed that, and it's different

I really liked Serenity as well, but that was because I watched the whole first season of Firefly beforehand

I always though 'Heat' was a great movie.

A couple more that I recommend:

Ravenous - scary movie with Robert Carlyle & Guy Pearce that involves a frightening story about cannabilism. Awesome film.

Saw - a great thriller with a well-written, thoughtful plot and some unique twists.

The Beach - OK, you might think that something involving Leondardo Di Caprio will be shit, but this film is actually very good IMO. Stunning visuals, a good cast and an interesting look at the theme of a 'Utopia' on a deserted island in Thailand all combine to make this a worthwile film. And no, it doesn't have a happy ending!

Wolf Creek - this Australian thriller/horror movie has only just been released in cinemas. What makes this film particularly scary is the fact that the plot is conceivable, and it seems very realistic. I should probably warn that this film is very graphic and violent - not for the faint-hearted. The vast Australian outback certainly makes for a captivating setting for a thriller.

Love, Honour & Obey A great British gangster movie, in the grand tradition of films like Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.

I'd steer well clear of 28 Days Later if I were you. I thought it started off well, but as in 50% of British films, it ended in the cackest of ways.

Speaking of British films though, I liked Love Actually for some reason. Way to throw my masculinity out the window.

Oh, and Butterfly Effect is class too. Along with The Machinist, War Of The Worlds (1953 version) and Enter The Dragon.
