Try this for a total mind F!@K exercise

Think you can mix great? Then try mixing old-school:

1. Mix only using vinyl
2. On your mixer, mix ONLY with the channel faders. No crossfader or EQ's AT ALL.
3. For cueing, cue using the one ear on/one ear off method. Do NOT cue more than one channel at a time EVER in the headphones, and do not use split-cue.
4. Try switching cue ears.

I've been trying to do this to get my beatmaching even tighter without "checking" my mixes by cueing in the master. This is what it's like to spin on a Bozak or Rane MP-2016 (not the A model, and without the EQ expansion).

It's, umm, interesting. And humbling

That's the point, DON'T use eq's, no swapping bassline's, etc. Makes you concentrate much more on track selection and programming.

And I always mix using the one ear on/off, but I usually check my mixes before I bring in a track to make fine adjustments. Try not doing that

ok but using eq's effects and etc helps your mixes. Especially sending them to clubs/labels etc. If your gonna just plain mix records its gonna seem pretty bla. I do know what your saying though gets the perfection of a mix down but eq's and effects are needed now a days in mixes and sometimes if the beat is off a bit good use of EQ's and Effects help it
