DJs Being Pushed Out by iPods

The title is a little sarcastic, but its still interesting... funny

quote:
The jukebox at the bar Brian Toro manages isn't gathering dust just yet — but it may only be a matter of time. The popular nightspot is among a growing number of places across the country where people can bring their iPods and other portable music players and, for as long as the bartender allows, share their personal favorites with the crowd.

"Everybody wants to be a DJ,"...

Bah, just like an open decks night but without real DJs. It is literally just someone cashing in on the iPod craze and nothing more.
And considering they make a reference to a Juke Box then it's not exactly the venue you would find any DJ worth his salt anyways.

Cheers
Nem

No Name for the bar says all about it and besides that Brian Toro isint exactly the person dictating music policy around the world. Maby if it was a big club like fabric i would be worried but i think the chances of that happening are about the same as me farting monkeys

Well put.

Apple stuff is generally a joke. Overpriced consumer junk packaged into pretty plastic.

Just to give you an idea of how unoriginal the "new" ipod mini is..

In 1954, regency released the world's first pocket transistor radio. It was called the TR1. pictured above is the iPod mini and the regency TR1. 51 years, but little has changed. only difference is the iPod supports music piracy, not the artists.

I'd be more tha happy to go back to the good ole days of warm tube-generated AM radio signals with nothing but vinyl and a mic driving a tube transmitter that could heat a siberian shack with no insulation all winter long.

technology has turned into such gheyness!

meanwhile, i'm going to go put the needle down on my favorite piece of 1970s technology.

I hope this is a joke... (actually after re-reading it I'm pretty sure it IS sarcastic, but I'll rant anyway)

You are saying that because the iPod is the same size as an FM radio that it's equivalent in usefulness?

I've had an iPod for over two years now (and haven't had a single problem with it). I used several other MP3 players prior to the iPod, and they were all so much more difficult to operate and populate with music. I'm no idiot, try driving and changing tracks on some of the current non-iPod MP3 players and you'll crash your car. The createive nomad required you to press buttons on both sides of the unit to navigate the tracks.

The iPod "just works", which is whole idea of Apple products. I plug my iPod into my mac and everything works just as it should, no muss, no fuss. Digital camera, never a problem. Recording video, seemless. I have a computer science degree, I just can't tolerate poor design any longer. I want my home computers to work without constant intervention.

My folks just purchased a new HP machine, and I offerred to help them set it up and transfer their data over. It was ridiculously tedious getting everything running. Even trying to install a printer driver for their HP printer (yes, same manufacturer) crashed on a new machine. These type of things happen MUCH less frequently with Mac's, but yet, you're going to pay more for that user experience. To me, it's worth it. And I like having a stylish machine in my home that's not intrusive and noisy.

As for people pirating music with iPods... yes MP3 and digital downloads have made music pirating very easy, but this has been going on as long as recordable media has been around. I remember recording tracks off the radio (ugh!) in the 80's to cassette tapes.

The iPod lets me take a ton of music with me wherever I go. I frequently record my sets and listen to them in the car. It's much easier to do this with my iPod than burning CD's and having to carry them around, etc.

As for the Numark iPod mixer, it really is just a toy. Clearly it's not intended to be used by anyone serious about DJ'ing. What is NOT a toy is the Numark CDX-like player coming out soon that has a hard drive built-in. Nor is the new Pioneer DJ software that's being release that will likely interface with their next generation CDJ unit. Why fight the progress? You're vinyl isn't going anywhere, and it shouldn't. Embrace the technology available to you, you'll be ahead in the long run.
