this is really an exciting time for trance, prog, tech whatever you wanna call it.
what i'm excited by are the types of music / songs that incorporate different istruments and don't follow TYPES. gabriel and dresden have been amazing at this lately, using that incredible guitar sound in both "beautiful things" and "zocalo"; and the "u2"-esque sound i've just started hearing, particularly used in redanka's "in a state (fucked vocal mix)". its so new and novel that they've created a "g&d sound". why can't we all create our own sound, based on our influences?
seriously. has anyone heard some of the current hip-hop? amazing sounds. why can't they be used, either as sample, or as some original riff, in current trance. its almost less electronic sounding, but yet used for electronic music means.
it kind of culminated for me in tiesto's "flight 643". don't get me wrong, i LOVE that repetitive synth stab that is the heart of the song. and it certainly has aged well, as I still am a HUGE fan of the song. but lets be serious, where can it go from here? what are the possibilities?
i just think that hating on trance is justified, just because the direction its going right now is pre-tty pre-tty pre-tty (larry david anyone?) stale, and its now time to use all the options available to make this emotional music as emotional as possible. |
I would have to agree completely. I find much more variation in sounds and melodies used in other forms of EDM today than in trance.
Andy Moor and co are starting to bring sick basslines back into trance but they still arent there yet.
Listen to a CD like Digweed's Fabric 20 and its just ridiculous some of the sounds used in the tracks he mixed.
Big synth anthems are great now and then...but the music I love most is the kind that has a million subtleties, diverse sounds and a strong melody. Also non-standard builds, breakdowns and drops.
A sick bassline is always nice too.
