if you live near a college, you can also try looking in their off-campus apt. listings (some schools only allow them to be viewed by students while others leave them free for outsiders to browse). edit - that's how i found my first apt, browsing a school's open-to-the public web site; got my second apt. via word-of-mouth.
friends and acquaintances have been successful with craigslist, driving through neighborhoods and word-of-mouth, so i'd try those before dealing with grubby realtors or pay-sites.
