Dunno hypothetical... ???

with the lack of decent-sized venues around and a lack of venue owners willing to 'gamble' by featuring underground dance music finding a suitable location to throw qualtiy events where the focus is on great music first and foremost has proven harder and harder over the past few years.

venues like roxy blu closing down only to become a posh 'supper club' among others seems to be the latest trend.

my question is this... if a promoter(s) went out on a limb to secure a venue in the entertainment district (which usually doesn't cater to anything other than mainstream 'cheese' for the most part) and got the owners on board to truly commit to, and invest in, a weekly night featuring great underground dance music on a good system, (regardless of the musical format on other nights of the week) would you come out to support it?

would the location and/or former incarnation/status of the venue deter you from checking it out or cause you to stay away?? could the right promotion and musical focus overcome past negative stigmas? are torontonians open-minded enough to give somethign like that a chance or is the idea i'll fated/doomed from the get-go??

just curious to get your thoughts.

Venue is key. An unpopular venue significantly multiplies the challenge involved in having a successful event.

Cross-cultural (cross-genre) integration generally hasn't worked very well in the club scene.

People associate certain venues/spaces with certain styles, cultures, genres -- breaking those associations (again) significantly multiplies the challenge involved in having a successful event.

Throw both of the above ideas out the window if the talent booked to play said event is so huge that people ignore all factors and just go. Some DJs can fill any venue, anywhere, anytime - book those and you don't need a popular venue and you don't need a venue associated with the style of the DJ.

For someone like myself I can only party on Fridays and Saturdays...so sure if the night was a friday or saturday I would be in.

would I go based on the DJ alone? I think so. Would everyone else? Doubtful.

coming from Miami / southbeach where every corner is a nightclub i would say the talent you bring to a club has alot to do with the crowd and the quality quantity of the crowd you attract.

now true, that TO cant compare to miami just yet but the basic principles still apply. as sais before if you book a dj that can fill any club anywhere then you are looking at djs of the sort of tiesto. now sure you will draw a huge crowd have a sold out event but truly was the event sold out basd on the efforts of the club and its promoters or the event was sold out cos everyone who knows so called underground music knows of tiesto.

basically what i am trying to say is that having a great night at club week in and week out depends on alot more factors than past reputation, type of music, crowd, and prmoters of the club. for example the staff of the club the level of comfortness at the club and many more things including what you mentioned. a new EDM club arising out of a top 40 club is a risky tradeoff but it can be done if right promoters right owners right talent and ofcourse the right kind of people are working in the club. sometimes you will have a crowd that comes just based on the dj you bring and sometimes you will have a crowd that comes because the drinks are cheap or etc etc etc and alot of times a mix of everything. in the club industry one thing is tied to another so if you wanna run a successful club then you gotta make sure that everything is done right, sure sometimes here and there will be screwups but proper measure taken to ensure those screw ups dont happen again is also to be considered.

my fingers hurt now so i will stop here lolz
