This item has been discussed in other topics here....
Summary:
- Download a few free kick samples
- Layer them (example: one with only low freq's, one with mid/high or something like that).
- Eq them right and experiment with effects (compressors etc).
- Use you ears...
- Don't give up until you got what you want...
Step 1 to 4 are important.
Step 5 is REALLY important...

Dave West's thread
But the problem is with his thread is that it doesn't say what program he uses. I'm a beginner and therefor it's hard to understand where I can use the information. I'm using Reason 2.5, can I use his information there or is it better to do the kick in soundforge?

Can someone please explain how to do a good trance kick in reason. I want it to sound like Alex M.o.r.p.h, Airbase and Armins.
And also quick how to sample in Reason.
Again I know it has been metioned a couple of times but it has not helped me that much.
Thanx! |
Hi mate, I was asking the very same thing on this and other message boards. I had some idea but i too was confused as to what program to use. As said before if you are a beginner is to read up on some of the fundamentals of frequencies, how to use the effects, what they do etc if you havent done so already.
1st of all it can be done in reason and other programs like sound forge, I too wondered how but the best way is once you understand how to use the device's for EQ-ing etc then you'll have to try them out with some kicks and get the right sounds you need, trial and error. By doing this I learnt how to make some kicks in reason 2.5 and sound forge, but i'm still learning. Anyway try this, its said before and you may have read already but hey!
- Use one kick thats sounds bassy and deep with low frequencies and another with a high punch to it with high frequencies, and hardly any bass to it if possible.
- Load each kick into the sampler of choice or redrum unit and wire in the EQ and the effects units you want to use for each so you can EQ and use the effects units for each kick separatly
- For the low end kick put a few notes in the redrum sequencer (thats what i used but you could use a sampler like the nn19 or nnxt) use the parametric EQ unit to cut out the hi frequencies. (cant get too techie here cos im still learning, but alot of the tutorials around will help if you need it)If you read the graph and learn how to use the unit its not hard to figure out. Boost the low end frequecies if it needs it, when it sounds quiet bassy and dull & has a good kick to it use that
- Do the same for the high end kick and cut out the low frequencies, where possible you could boost the high frequencies if needed. When it sounds punchy not too clickly unless you what that then thats ok, also using the parametric EQ unit
- When you play the notes in the sequencer you'll be placing the two types of kicks to play at the same time so the play together to give you the sound you want, layering them up.
- Use a compressor for both kicks and other effects units to get the sound right as when you play them together it'll prob sound a right mess at 1st. If so just go back to change the EQ's and other units you used and tweak them. As said before though you need to know what all the dials and knobs do on the units you use before tweaking as you'll get fustrated trying to get the kicks right.
I know this isnt too technical but that may help you at this stage, as some of the technical stuff threw me at 1st. It may not be the best tutorial, i hope it helps you out mate.
