[prog] jex - Lovesong (192 full)

Hi there, everybody. Been a while since I put something up here, hasn't it? Most of the problem is that the hosting that I was using fell out from under me, and only now got around to heading to yousendit for the first time in ever. So get it while it's hot, I suppose.

Anyway, this is a cute little ditty about love. Not like I'm in love, per se, but this sounds like a love song to me. Or at least a song that I would write about someone I love. You decide if it works or not.

I'm thinking of going back later and playing with the filter on the lead synth a bit because it just sounds so cool with filter modulation.

I know the kick has no middle. I like it that way.

jex - Lovesong
12:03 | 17 MB | 192 kbps | 136 BPM
Synths used: 3xOsc, Synth1, Tweakbench Pressure, Superwave P8

Sounds like there is 2 intros. I would skip one...

Very special and original track.
I like your melodies.
Like that 303'ish riff.

Badies:
The kick has no power at all.
I don't like that sound that plays for the first time at 0:04, imo it doesn't fits into the song.
I don't like the bass though it does it's job.

Keep it up!

//Alexander

It sounds like everything at the beginning has delay. Not that its a bad thing but it might be just a bit much. I love the percussion though. Very sweet rythme. Never heard a kick like that before. I dont really have time right now to listen to the whole thing but I like what I hear. I wouldn't really call it a love song though.

Not lovey. :P Nice mixdown man About the kick: I think it doesn't fit (you said you do) with the instruments you've got around it. There's too much air in this song to have such a low frequency thump. When I listen to this I hear a potentially different track underneath, and I'll try to explain: Put lowpass filters on pretty much everything and don't leave any of them all the way up. Leave it dreamy and kind of thumping... but then every once and a while, maybe for a small stab or a whole 16 bars, lift those cutoffs to open fully... If you understand what I'm saying, I think this would sound really cool. Make it kinda Crystalsphereish? (if you dunno who they are look em up, awesome stuff)

hey jex

interesting intro.

i love some of your synths. the melodies are really epic. that telstar sytle square wave is epic.

kick satrts - this is like an intro track i think. im awaiting a nice deep kick to come in...

when your bassline comes in it would be good if your kick got more full. definately a new sample with loads of punch. im not sure on your bass synth sound. it needs some reverb- but only a bit.

your synths and melodies are the best part of this. due to the weak kick and more standard percs i think the track looses a lot of its appeal.

i think it is a bit too long and a bit to varied in sounds.

some nice ideas- especially at the starting few mins.

rich

Reviewing as I listen

Nice retro sounding pads and strings at the start. Dont mind the over use of delay myself.

aargh... kick sounds like a tissue box. Really doesnt work at all. replace it!!

Yeah that second intro doesnt do much for the track. Infact, I think it ruins the lovely ambience you create with the pads at the start.

That sort of squarish 303 sound really dominates the mix. It sounds kind of dry too compared to the rest of the mix. Try giving it some autopan or stereo width maybe.

Melody at 5.20 is very nice. Track is picking up here.

Acid sounds are airy and compliment the pads well. Lots of lovely ambience and soundscapes create a real feel.

Overall nice track, some issues with the structure and a few elements need sorting out in the mix, but generally a very nice, spaced out track.

Rich: Thanks for the reverb suggestion on the bass. It's kinda hard to make it at all audible, but I'm doing what I can now to give the bassline some atmosphere.

I'll do what I can do about the "second intro."

I still don't like what adding mids does to the way the kick feels to me; the kick isn't meant to be very punchy in this track. Call me crazy, but I think too much punch ruins the mood for me. I'm trying to find a compromise on it right now. :/

Thanks to everyone who has reviewed so far.

Hey Jex

Cool different intro. Now I see about the kick, to be honest it sounds fine to me, it's nice to hear a track where the kick isn't in the forefront all the time.
Cool psy-trance-esq bassline you have there, reminds me of 80's synth music, as do some of the other instruments you use. Ha ha and some of the chord changes are very Terminator-ish .
I love the old school feeling with this, its very trippy and trancy. You could get lost in this track very easily. Excellent work jex, very impressive and original stuff.

Hey jex, good to hear something new from you

I am commenting as I listen...
Nice resonant sweeps in the intro. Good synthwork. It is a very long intro but it sets the dreamy mood quite well. Plus I like those long intros.
2:00 sounds maybe a little dry. However you got an interesting beat going on. Nice job on panning the sounds too. Sounds like you spent a lot of work on it. I think that passage is way too long, 1 minute and nothing really happens. You could at least introduce a bassline.
3:10 ... now theres the bassline, nice arpeggio, makes the tune more "running". I think I like it but I also think the bassline could be refined a little. I am not sure what is wrong with it... Maybe try rich's suggestion.
4:08 ... the buildup is really slow. I can not say I dislike it, I like lengthy and dreamy tunes. The layering is quite good now.
4:50 .. some nice percussion FX and stuff going on here... seems like we are in Prog territory
5:20 ... great arped high synth, I think it really fits and adds a lot of depth to the layers of melodies. However you should watch out, later on it gets a little muddy with some of the sounds. maybe a little more EQ-wise seperation is necessary, otherwise, good sound.
7:07 ... good acidline you introduce there. Maybe I personally would do it with a little less resonance and more drive, but in general I think it is a great sound that contributes a lot to this tune. Trippy!
9:00 ... Nice layering here. Ever thought of adding a more driving percussion in this main part? Maybe I would do that. Ah nevermind, later on you introduce more layers of percs, works quite well.
The ending part is extremely trippy. The bass works really well now with the rest of the tune. Good stuff mate!

Overall, this was a really deep track that got me quite tripping - I am not really thinking of love, when listening to this, however, but I think that lies in the eye of the listener.
You could consider making your mix a little "cleaner", it sounds a little muddy in the lower mid frequencies. But I think that kind of sound contributes very well to that dreamy feeling of the tune, so dont take it as criticism. I'd be very content with it. Good stuff!

hey jex , listening to your track right now. link doesn't work anymore, but i downloaded it some days ago. nice atmospheric intro. epic story. somewhat cheesy but not to the extreme. also it's a bit too long imo. about 10 minutes would be perfect. yes, the kick, sounds very lame. besides that it's well done.
