i find myself sometimes using vangard and it makes my tracks sound really generic. im sure loads of synths have the same affect in making software users sound like they are trying to copy big name producers.
i have started to wonder if it is possible to make a completely new sound anymore.
what you guys think?

Vanguard is the best BASIC synth, i mean its very classical, and its good to do the good'ol usual trance sounds. I think however for something more creative, other synths are better. I like zeta and absynth alot. Not to mention reaktor too......

Yes, Reaktor is a great tool for making new kind of sounds.
But it does'nt have to be the synth, it could be the effects you use too, if you're creative...

Synth patches are only half of the sound.
Vanguard is excellent for mid level basses, fx and harsh filter driven leads. Infact, I've tried other synths (zeta, discovery) for agressive psy leads and keep coming back to vanguard. I think for generic trance thought it sounds cheesy and probably isn't suited to those saw melodies and arps. You really have to work the lfos for it to sound good.

Right. Lfo's is great for making new sounds. If you choose to automate the right thing it can sound very different...

Vanguard is the greatest gift to psytrance since the nord.

Here you hear Vanguards original preset "BS Mooger".
The first one is the original sound with some delay,
and the second one I've added some effects.
Does not sound so much like each other.

The only reason you would find it limits productivity because it sounds the same as other instruments is because you're only using default presets. My production skills skyrocketed to the next level AFTER I began thinking outside the box. See all those knobs and buttons? When you use them, magical things can happen. Don't rush through your sound selection... spend an entire DAY on perfecting ONE sound if that's what it takes. Everything can be modified (As Spectra demonstrated)... so take advantage.
Also, on any given instrument, I generally have no less than 4 or 5 effects on it... which also changes the sounds again...
be creative and experiment... even if you don't end up using that sound in the final piece... learn how sound is processed through each of your various VSTs... you'll find that "generic" sound vanishes quickly...
