Another new figure to emerge from the minimal hype. Alex Smoke is a bit of a hit and miss character for me. He has some good
things out like Telemetry, but then there'll be about a half dozen releases that are just plain boring. He has an album on Soma
which I still need to check out further. |
I liked Telemetry too. You should check out Incommunicado. I have the LP and recommend most of the 8 tracks that appear on
there. That is why I am here now though, trying to look for this sound.
Like you with Alex Smoke, I have trouble finding good Minimal Techno (if that is what it is) releases in this style, from other
artists. As chesco pointed out earlier, to check Michael Mayer. There are not many of his tracks that I have listened to that I
like. I trawl through quite a lot of samples daily of Techno artists and I am finding it difficult to find.
There is a good album from Adam Beyer called the Ignition Key (Tracks such as Ignition Key, Triangle, Truncated Truth, Second Surrounding). Much of this is what I believe to be quite minimal, but then 90% of anything else I find by him is quite hard & fast and doesn't interest me as much.
I have checked out some of Chris Leibing's stuff and can't really get into it, Ricardo Villalobos too, I like his Alcachofa Tools
but can't find much else. Carl Finlow has some decent stuff, but again there is quite a mix and difficult to find much good minimal.
I'm babbling now though, heheh.

andre kraml - Safari (alex smoke remix) |
I've only heard samples of this and it is decent. I am not particularly aroused by it.
I like Drama Society ft Turner - Crescendo (Alex Smoke Remix).
I like Wighnomy Bros - "Wurz + Blosse" - good call for them, looks promising as does Oliver Hacke!
I liked the sample you posted of Sortie too. That is exactly the kind of stuff I am looking for, but Alex Smoke productions are limited and I am wondering if there are any other artists out there with a similar sound.

I've been listening to Incommunicado for the past 2 days now. I finally took it out of the cd player months ago and now it's back in. It's sort of hit and miss with me also, but some tracks are HITHITHITHIT. He seems to create a dark, brooding, warmly layered synthy, stringy full deep encompassing sound. I love his textures he creates.. that it's! the texture is almost drowning. I know exactly what you're looking for. Give me some time to look for adequate samples. And fill me in with what you've encountered due to the recommendations in this thread. hahaa a fellow Portishead! That explains why you like Smoke!
