A hard drive is not designed for any specific operating system or bios. It is suppose to be a blank space ready for whatever you put in it whether it'd be Linux, Unix, WinXP, and so forth.
My guess is 3 things:
1)do what you said regarding the utility
2)check pins and cable
3)use partition magic
