questions about soccer, or er football...

OK guys, so here is the deal. I live in Texas where there is little or no coverage of soccer(except the pathetic MLS), and I have recently have become somewhat interested in European and international soccer, especially leading up to the World Cup this summer. I am simply amazed by how passionate soccer fans overseas can be, and it's a big reason why I've become interested. I am extremely knowledgeable about most other sports, but I don't know all that much about soccer. I've been able to pick up what I can by watching some games on ESPN, but I still have a lot of questions. I would very grateful if some of you could share your expertise with me. Let me also preface this by saying I realize how passionate some of you are about your local or national teams, so please do not tell me how bad the USA sucks, or launch into a long explanation of why your club rules. Let me also apologize if I am offending anyone by using the word soccer. Here are some of the questions I have:

1. How is a champion crowned in the English Premier league?
2. How exactly does the UEFA cup work?
3. What is the most prestigous title a club team can win?
4. (Briefly) What the hell happened to Manchester United, with the whole fans in black protest thing and all?
5. Why is Real Madrid so average with all those superstar players?
6. Who would you rank as the top 5-10 players in the world?
7. From what I understand, if USA advances through it's draw in the World Cup, we will have to play Brazil in one of the next two rounds. I know they will be heavily favored, but we are ranked #6 now, so is there any chance we could beat them? How often do underdogs win big soccer matches?
8. Is there anything else interesting or important I should know?

I have more questions, but I'll leave it at this for now. Thanks in advance for your time.

Matt

Re: questions about soccer, or er football...

1. How is a champion crowned in the English Premier league?
I believe the winner get this CUP:

2. How exactly does the UEFA cup work?
UEFa cup is "the little brother" of the UEFA Champions League. In the Champions league all the best clubs in Europe play against each other. First in a group stage of 4 teams. There are about 8 groups or so. After that theres a draw for the next fixtures in which 2 teams take on one and other in a knock out stage, after that quarter finals, semis and then final. Ditto for UEFA Cup but the teams that play there are the teams that simply didnt make it to the Champions League. And, after the group stage of the Champions league, the nr3 of the group can go -as a consolation price- to the next leg of the UEFA CUP.

3. What is the most prestigous title a club team can win?
UEFA Champions League

4. (Briefly) What the hell happened to Manchester United, with the whole fans in black protest thing and all?
Dunno, maybe about that rich American dude that wanted to buy the club ...

5. Why is Real Madrid so average with all those superstar players?
Haha, i could go for five pages for this question... To keep it objective though: theres no explanation for that, if i would know i'ld be making big € in Madrid (chich i would refuse off course)

6. Who would you rank as the top 5-10 players in the world?
Ronaldinho (Barça), Samuel Eto'o(Barça), Schevchenko (AC Milan), Thierry Henry (Arsenal), Zinedine Zidane (Real Madrid), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) Buffon (Juventus)

7. From what I understand, if USA advances through it's draw in the World Cup, we will have to play Brazil in one of the next two rounds. I know they will be heavily favored, but we are ranked #6 now, so is there any chance we could beat them? How often do underdogs win big soccer matches?

To be honest, no, brazil are once more the big favorites for this World Cup, they have a huge selection, and an absolute football dream team. Its not unusual in footbaal that underdogs win the game so theres always hope, anything can happen so i'ld keep hoping, but brasil will probably be a bit too big for you guys.

8. Is there anything else interesting or important I should know?

Watch FC Barcelona if you want to see the most beautiful football on this planet at the moment.

There are twenty teams...and they play each other twice. At the end of the 38 games...the team with the most points at the end of the season wins.

I'm very disappointed with that attitude.
I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.' - Bill Shankly

3) I think most clubs (england, italy and spain) would put winning their local leagues above the champions league.

5) I agree with most but i would put terry or nesta over zidane ...

1. there are 20 teams, and they play each other twice (once at home and once away), the team with the most points at the end of the 38 games is crowned champion.

2. UEFA Cup or UEFA Champions League ?

3. at home it would be the local championship (in england EPL, in spain La Liga, in italy Serie A, etc ...) and the cup. in europe the UEFA Champions League, in South America Copa Libertadores, in Africa the CAF Champions League, etc ...

4. Manure was bought by a rich American who will soon transfer the team to the NFL, it's gonna happen in the next year. for more questions about MANURE, please refer to raveed

5. because they're gay hahahahaha, they're only there for the money, they are sold out pricks, etc ... when people take advantage of the summer break to rest and prepare for the next season, stupid real madrid goes all around the world playing stupid games for stupid groupies to collect more $$$ so that they can buy their expensive gay players who end up not performing well, it's not that hard to figure. fuck the putos.

6. RONALDINHO, SAMUEL ETO'O, LIONEL MESSI, all the rest is crap or too old now or inconsistent (specially the italian lads, they suck).

7. there is no fuckin chance in this world or the other USA is going to beat brazil hahahahaha and that FIFA ranking crap is bullshit, it's like saying Tiesto is the best dj in the world hahahahahaha n00b

8. YES NOOB, some of the stuff i said is bullshit i made up just for fun (the manure going to NFL), but all the rest is true. and i'm known to be the most annoying over-confident prick in the sports forum (but it's all an act)

Because they're old and unmotivated. Real Madrid stars' good times finished in 2003.
