Is there a format for a mixable trance song to follow. there is one, i know that, that is why all the tracks i make do not mix compaired to all the ones done professionally. if you have any idea on this, shout.

Is there something like drum and snare for 4X4 then add in a melody line etc......

Most trance (that I've heard) seems to work on 16-beat patterns.

the main melody, bassline percussion is a 4 or 8 beat count...majority is 8...then every 4 cycles of those 8 beats (meaning counting 1..2..3..4...all the way to 32) something is added like clap or the percussion...as you know in most trance songs it starts with the bass with kicks and sometimes percussion but never the melody in the beginning (well thats why we call it progressive trance) so what you do is when you produce...make the bass and the kicks first...percussion is then added then melody then take the melody out then the percussion and then you have only the bass and the kick left

that is helpful, i recognised that but it helps to have that there. Any ideas on how many cycles of 32 before a big break into the melody and or the break point? how many different sounds would you suggest? would you put a seccond kick into it or what? just trying to get the basics down before i try a truely mixable song. big help there Kenetica

ey to me "progressive" means that it's the trance of the future.....not something in the build up...all trance builds like that.

anyways, personally, I'd add subtle stuff every 16 beats, otherwise it might get a bit dull. Keep building until you have your complete rhythm track going + a bassline + maybe something else but not main synth riff. Then throw in a break. Can't really explain...if you can't hear how to structure a song maybe music makin'isn't for you. Listen to tracks you like, listen to the way they build.

dj ampz its not problem ..im glad i could help you out...about your questions about how many cycles until the break point or the climax or whatever..its all up to how many samples you are using and how you decide to put them together...you might introduce an extra kick and a percussion at the same time but then you have the other option which is to progress slowly and add only one sample at a time...its all up to you and your unique style...but if youre just starting out to make tracks dont be too focused in being original and unique..it will make things a lot more complicated for you...a baby has to crawl before he/she walks and the same is with producing...little steps first then the big steps...
im guessing that you use FL right? if you do then look to see if you have the 'binary finary - 1999' cut...after you listen to the cut go download the full version of that song (if you dont already have it)and listen to see how they put it together..what is added at what time and how they added it. if you dont have the binary finary cut...then go download this song veracocha - carte blanche...that song is a perfect example on the format in which a trance song is produced...send me feedback on how your track is comin =]

basically songs are made in 4's

4 beats to a bar
with meoldies being 1,2,4,8,16,32,64 etc long

therefore it doesnt really work if you have a tune come in after 24 bars, it should either be 16 or 32 you see.

Obviously there can be adjustments to this but its a solid framework to start with.

A bit like the standard type tune

begining beat > add bass > add bit of tune > drumroll > breakdown
> tune comes in > drum roll > tune and beat etc etc

When you start to introduce the melodic synths, it also helps to filter them in gradually over say 96 beats while leading up to the first break. You can also try not playing out the full melody right away, but just the first few notes cycled over, filtering in until the break...or maybe have a couple of different synths playing different melodies that are harmonically compatible. Then you could filter them out on the break with some pads, then have them come back in together during a build. Dunno...hope that helps a little
