recording: iRiver vs Sony Minidisc

Ive been searching the forum for specifics but couldnt find...

Im looking for a portable solution for recording sets. I picked up the Cowon iAudio U2 only to find the line in record option only goes up to 128 kbps. The iRiver ifp 799 w/line in goes up to 320 which is nice. I also cheked out Sony's Hi MD 700 or 910 minidisc which does 64 or 256. The Sony's seem to be made for recording while the iRiver is more for listening. One other consideration is the Sony doesnt work with Mac which I may be switching to. Anyone have experience with these that can tell me which is better for recording? thanks

Edit - both are right around $150 so price is not an issue

I've used an iRiver a couple of times to record sets and they turn out phenomenal... I still prefer recording onto my laptop, but for a nice, portable solution, those things are pure fire...

Good luck Mike, see ya tomorrow!

My friend and I wana buy one along with a good mic to record livesets at clubs

(Sasha + Zabs Feb 18th if anyone cares...lol)

I'm still having trouble finding a good one...

Capacity: Up to 1 Gig

Time Limit: I don't know for sure, but the sets we recorded were full nights out, which means about 5-6 hours of audio, and we didn't have a problem at all.

Don't know if that helps at all, I don't own one myself, but I've used them and they seem to have worked out great...

Yes they are both avail up to 1 Gig...in theory you could record until that is full at whatever bitrate you record at (the batter lasts like 30 hours).

I think one of the sony models comes with a mic as well

Hmm

Sasha & Zabs are gonna play probably from 12:30 to 7am

Wonder what bitrate would be god to get as much of the set without losing too much quality.

An hour of 320 is like...200MB? I'm thinking of just recording in 320 as much as I can...so the quality will be better.

I *may* be out there for that weekend...

Avalon is open that late!?! I thought LA was all early closing!

Edit: a 10 min track @ 320 is ~22 MB so 1 hour = 132 Mb (if my math is right)

I've used my iRiver a couple of times for recording sets out, and they usually turn out real nice as long as you remember to leave the line-in recording level down quite a bit. Mine is an old one and doesn't have much space though so I usually leave the bitrate down a lot so I can get more time. A couple of times there have been errors where the recording starts skipping all over the place. I'm not sure why it happened but I'm thinking it's battery related.

lol Avalon closes at 7.

Usually the big DJs go till 4 or 5 then they do aftrhour power till 7...but Fundacion nights always get all the way till close.

I would definitely simply recommend 192..........all scene releases for sets are this quality, and at 320 kbps, you'll be running out of room fast...
