Quick Ableton question

Probably an easy one, but I've got a paper to do and don't have much time to look it up. So I'll ask you guys while it's on my mind:

When I mix, I run my mixer's master out into my computer's line in, and then run my computer's master out to my speakers--this lets me record through Cool Edit.

My question is, can I open Ableton and have it pick up, and lock on to, the music coming from my turntables so that I can add samples and beats? If so, will I be able to record what Ableton is doing into Cool Edit as well?

i dont think you can do that. well... only way i can think of is to have a loop (just a stick, like a metronome) playing in output two in ableton, output two being an unused channel on your mixer so you can listen on headphones without it being audible int the recording. but youll have to beatmach to ableton and that makes tempo changes weird at least. and then you can record "what you hear" in cool edit.

well if you had 2 sound cards... yes

sound card 1 - ableton out to mixer
sound card 2 - mixer to sound card in

you would be using ableton like a sampler though and only bringing up the fader on the 1st sound card

Whats the point of that? Most soundcards have line-in, or some type of input. You dont need a separate sound card to record.

I have a quick question too.
Is it possible to run Ableton with my Serato Scratch off the same laptop?
I'm thinking no.

Maybe if I get an external USB soundcard?

Thanks!
