Gap inserted at start of MP3 - annoyance

Hey people,

Im having an issue at the minute when saving mp3s.

For some reason, a small gap is inserted at the start of every mp3 I save, and this is having a knock on effect as it throws the timing of loops off as you can imagine.

I have the same problem in Cooledit and Soundforge, so Im suspecting it's something do with a codec - Ive tested this on my laptop and theres no problem at all.

Any help greatly appreciated, this is annoying me now lol

Cheers,
John

Gaps at the start and end of the file is a "feature" of the MP3 format.
Read more about it here:

Funnily enough I was thinking of re-installing LAME but when I was playing about with it, there doesnt seem to be a physical installation file, only a .dll file? Any idea what I should do with it?

As for gaps being a feature, I agree that they are, but when running my laptop against my desktop, it doesnt happen on the laptop using the same files in the same program and therefore its a feature i dont want lol.

incorrect unfortunately, I wish that was the case - again, I'll state that I can take the same mp3 file on my desktop and the same file on my laptop.

I can then load the file into the same program or programs and remove the silence and then save the file.

On my laptop, the silence at the start is completely removed, on the desktop the silence is re-inserted.

Anybody else had this problem?

If you are using a decent sequencer i.e. Cubase or Logic just turn off the quantize function and manually edit the size of the imported loop to so it starts at the start of the waveform.

But why are you using mp3 loops in production? the sound quality is reduced by the compression. You should use .wav of AIFF

believe me if i say not many people will notice if it's done properly.

A track of a friend of mine got sold online as 320kbps mp3 while the label only had the 128kbps mp3 file because they wouldn't pay the remix fee. So they re-encoded it to 320kbps (probably with some extra processing). Nobody ever said anything about it.

The platform will not "reinsert" silence onto a file just because it is stored in a certain place... Are you using two different pieces of software to listen to this file?

check the winamp output settings:

1)wave out: doesant fade between tracks
2)direct sound: fades slightly between tracks (the 'fade' can be customized)

+ if youre trying to rip mixcds to your comp with separate tracks then a slight gap between two mixed tracks is unavoidable, Im afraid. Try ripping as a single file.
