Re: Looking to buy a new computer

what's the difference between SDRAM and RAM?

SDRAM is a type of RAM, vs other types like RDRAM or the older EDO DRAM. As far as I know all system memory is DRAM(dynamic RAM, and SDRAM is synchroneous DRAM). DDR SDRAM is double date rate (DDR), and DDR2 is dual channel so run in pairs it is faster. SRAM, or static RAM, is much faster and more expensive and is used for cache and I am not sure what else.
As stated above, you want DDR, and if it is DDR2 you want it in pairs as the PC you showed the specs for. As also stated above, non DDR SDRAM is old and I don't think you would see it listed in any new PCs these days.

This is exactly why he should get a Mac! Everything works perfectly out of the box, no fannying about with anything, everything is so simple & well designed. Saving countless hours of frustration that you get with windows & PC. Which means you can get things done a lot faster, leaving you with more time for your life. I have never looked back since choosing Apple. Windows is sh1te, full stop.

Some people prefer PCs, others prefer macs. I prefer PCs (and I'm not trying to persuade you to switch from your mac, so please don't do that to us )
And if I were you, I wouldn't get any of that stuff My target would be a socket 939 AMD X2 3800+, it's a 64 bit dual core processor, and it's not so expensive. Get DDR, not SDRAM, sdram is old and has been replaced by DDR, which is now being replaced by DDR2 (which IMO, isn't all that better...). If you decide on AMD, try to steer away from nForce 4 mainboards, I've heard they sometimes give you crap when working with low-latency audio cards.
And run Windows XP Pro, the words Media Center just yell out "Consumer product" a bit too much for me (I've never tried it, don't know much about, but still have very little faith in it...)
