recently installed slackware, still getting the hang of it. i think ill end up stickin with windows. id like to convert, i just dont have the ambition

I use Ubuntu myself, just like kubuntu, ecept using Gnome instead of KDE. It is indeed the easiest-to-use linux system out-of -the-box. I wish t had been around when I was first starting out with linux.

Kinda cool that I've helped a few non-techie types switch to linux, cause they were frustrated with windows and did not want/could not afford to buy a mac. My friends who have switched now love it...i'd recommend it to anyone, as long as they have some degree of techines, or are able to quickly grasp new tech concepts.

Funny, i just installed Ubuntu last night (after using suse/redhat for years). So far, it is a very nice distribution. They've done a great job.

i wanted to convert to linux when i got this new comp, and i got mandriva2006 and liked it, but the problem was my network is set out in a weird way that doesnt support linux (lan over phoneline>usb), so i had to choose between internet and linux :/

i'll install it again when i switch to wifi or something

funny...after using it for a bit i've noticed that this system is a serious pain in the ass. my internet on kubuntu is really slow, i can't get access to my D drive which has all my media (music, video's, pics), my display goes screwy sometimes...and to top it off I can't seem to figure out how to install shit; which is MOST annoying.

This system's saving grace right now, is the sleek user interface. It kills the best Windows skins out there, and is very very quick. I'm gonna try to get this thing to work, but "right-out-of-the-box" it's frustrating as hell.

Hmm...not sure about the graphical issue, since that could be a number of things. I am a *bit* surprised it didn't work out of the box, but hey, every OS does have its issues. None are perfect :-D

However, you *should* be able to mount your "D" drive, however in linux they have a totally different naming convention, verymuch unlike windows/dos. Open up a terminal and type in ls /mnt/ then mount anything that sounds like a hard drive name (probably each partition starts with "hd"). For example, if you wanted to mount your drive at hd2, you would type sudo mount /mnt/hd2

By the way, certain formats, which the ubuntu project calls "restricted" (like MP3, WMA, etc.) are not able to run out of the box. The ubuntu website has some great directions on how to make them work, though.

Installing is generally done with the synaptic package manager, however you can use apt/aptitude, or even compile your own linux apps. It seems that the most common stable linux apps are in the ubuntu repositories via synaptic.

use gentoo, after using it for about 6 months, its the only linux distro i like anymore. i use windows nowadays though, mainly for gaming. i never had luck with steam running in wine.
