Misstress Barbara @ Heksinki review
I went out to celebrate my sister's bday last night @ Helsinki where Misstress Barbara was booked for her Come With Me tour. I already had an idea of what to expect music-wise not only because of her CD tour but because Barbara has had a habit of playing her new sound now in Ottawa for at least a few years, including her last set at Helsinki in March 2005.
Got there at around 11:20 or so and there was already a lineup, moved quickly enough though.. I heard the lineup only got worse after that and lasted the entire night so I am glad we went then. The club was already starting to fill up. It was the typical Helsinki crowd and there was a very near 50/50 ratio, I was surprised not to recognize that many people actually. Serge and Paulo were playing to a full dancefloor and Barbara ended up coming on around midnight. They had moved the dj booth from when it first opened so I actually ended up being practically a foot away from her for most of her set... that was a nice surprise, I have seen Barbara many times over the years but never really watched her this closely. She received a warm reception and the crowd was into it right from the start, a lot of people getting their pics and stuff with her.. at one point I felt bad people bugged her so much, during her mixes etc.. but she seemed in a good mood. I didn't really like the music all that much, but I can tell it went over well with the crowd and she'll be back soon enough for sure. Her mixing was better than I expected it to be as well from previous times I have seen her. She also barely used her headphones the entire set. I must admit though, I don't find her as interesting to watch anymore, with the pace of her sets. It's not exactly music synonimous with fist pumping or a lot of her previous "in the groove" traits.. I don't expect djs to be that way, but it's just how I have known her in the past. I read her website earlier today though and I think it's good that she is following her heart music-wise and that she is being reassured her new sound is being well received.
The place got shut down around 2 by the cops which was a bit strange.. I have never had that experience in ottawa before, but it's true the club was over its 'legal' 175 or so capacity, but it definitely was not rammed or uncomfortable. So Barbara only ended up playing about 90 or so minutes. Helsinki is a fun place to see Djs though for sure, small little place.
Christian: I didn't see you! I kept my eyes open but the place was actually even a bit darker than usual too. I was wearing a pink top right beside the dj booth for a good chunk of the night.
Hope you enjoyed your roadtrip.
Overall pretty fun night... I'm not going to bother going to Parking though when she plays in March.
My sister didn't bring her camera for once but I will post some pics when they are online.
