Parental Advisory on Trance.

I was surfing web and bumped on this website of one trance internet radio station where a Mom of her 14 year old son was pleading the station to remove trance tracks with 'drugs vocals' in it.

Here is her letter:

quote:

I would like to appeal to this radio station to stop playing music with songs where the words ecstasy and other drug words are included.

There is a song that just talking cocain cocain cocain extasy....

I wont let my kids listen that!

Too many kids listen to this radio station and its not nice to bring drugs into connection with dance type music like it was with hard metal music and rock.

Thanks

What you guys think?

Should their be 'Parental Advisory Notice' on trance CDs?

Should these radio stations refrain themselves from playing such tracks outside Hardcore channels?

Hahaha thats a laugh. Absolutely NO to parental advisory, references to drugs in trance and other EDM tracks are different to those in other mainstream/commercial non-EDM tracks...its hard to explain but I think some will understand what I mean.

In EDM, drug references are not really a promotion for drug use in most cases, they are more about the feeling/ecstasy (in the literal meaning of the word, not the drug itself,...even though there is connection with it) of the track and the drug..

whereas in other genres like hiphop and rnb when drugs are usually mentioned it sounds "cool" which is what many teenagers and gangsta's like (ok I know I'm generalising a little here but along the main lines I think thats the case).

Besides, there is a very strong link between drug usage and EDM which most other genres of music lack or where drug users are only a very small percentage of listeners of that music (pop/rock, etc.). That mother, as most of the simple narrow-minded public should get away from the negative stereotypes of drugs and drug users the media have poisoned them with.

A few days ago here on Belgian television there was a report about alcohol consumption amongst youth and it was quite shocking really, I can't remember the exact figures but I think 20% of even 10-12year olds drank a glass of alcohol and at a slightly higher age it happens on a not so very irregular basis. And it seems very well accepted amongst teenagers, as does smoking and cannabis usage, but when it comes to other things there is an immediate cut-off line between the acceptance of those substances or not. Fair enough, but it is quite inconsistent and hypocritical in a way to completely accept alcohol and binge drinking by youngsters every week yet almost condemn sporadical controlled uses of other drugs.

Btw, there have been a couple of threads with a list of tracks with links to ecstasy and other drugs in them but can't seem to find them back with the search function...anybody mind giving me a hand?

i wonder what song she heard..

the same could be said for all genres of popular vocal music, be it hiphop to country. meh

edit: and on a side note, parents who can't even spell the word "ecstasy" should not be the ones advocating social change.

Have you got the source for that?
Because that's the shittest "letter" I've ever read.

What kind of comment is "too many kids listen to this radio station"?
Just because her kid listens to it doesn't mean a lot do.

Most trance vocals are about love and feelings, cant remember hearing a trance song recently saying to pop a pill down my throat or roll one up.

This is almost as bad as that fake thing about women calling trance sexiest.

It was on Digitally Imported Forums. I know DI sucks, but it does have quit a lot of children following.

Not that I want Trance to be categorised as an adult music genre... but you see most of the Hip Pop and Rock music albums are labeled with Parental Advisory notices because they have social slangs in it. Do you think that drugs which are banned from society should not have 'Parental Advisory Warnings' but albums with socially accepted slangs should have?

I learned about drugs from a friend of mine in high school before I'd ever heard about it in EDM. And I went to a private school.

Parents are idiots these days. Kids will learn this shit no matter what. The parent's responsibility is not to protect them from this knowledge, but to make sure that it is complete knowledge. Let them weigh the risks and benefits.
