"Jaws" Snow Plow now with (PLOWDUCATION!!! SNOWPLOWING 101)
Interesting PloW!!!
Plow #83 was one of the many tools the LIRR used to keep the road open in the winter. This plow is split-wedge shaped and was pushed ahead of one or more steam locomotives at speeds up to 35mph. #83 is the last surviving wedge snowplow from the Long Island Railroad.
We can trace the history of snowplows on Long Island back to the 1880s. During the 1880s and 1890s the railroad purchased several of these wedge shaped plows. In November 1898 the Long Island Rail Road took delivery of a Leslie Brothers-designed rotary snowplow, #193, manufactured by Cooke Locomotive & Machine Works in Paterson, NJ and added it to its inventory of snow plowing equipment. This rotary snowplow has survived to this day and is currently on display at Steamtown in Scranton, PA.
