Dream Thief (Prog-Dream Mix) - soundclick, 90%

Greetings... I'm getting close to completion of this project called Dream Thief. You can find it here:

My Band Page

Is the kick too (weak, compressed, uncomplicated, loud, other)?

Is the rolling bass too ( ?? )...

What can I do to make it better?

The intro mood itself reminds me of house, for some reason... yet it's a far cry from house. The rest of the piece is rather etheral and moody, you might like it if you like dream trance. The remainders are alot like the progressive stuff I like. These are merely genre speculations.

Hey... I think this is pretty good. Really nice beginning, I really like all of the melodies. The kick could have maybe slightly more higher frequencies to make it more audible in the mix. Also the snare fills are imo little bit too loud. Nice melody at 1:30...

The track could work better with a clearer structure, now imo the break ( when the drums go away ) comes too fast. The pads are really nice...

Good work!

Cheers, Lakeus

Hi, just had a listen and to me the percussion sounds a bit out, the kick and the snare/clap dont seem to fit in my opinion. The rest of the track sounds pretty damn nice. Would like to hear another version with different percs as it is something i'd like to play.

Cheers, Tom

Electronic Monkeying Around

Review

As soon as I hit the play button. All I can say is I'm speechless.
I haven't heard this much energy in a tune since I litened to Air For Life and Atlantis on my Ipod. The beginning is absolutely beautiful, bass comes in muffled and the steals the show with a powerful cutoff rate coming in to make it sounds razor sharp. The clap sounds weak but for some reason it sounds good; how does that work? I don't know. Pads come in sweeping like waves in the ocean to be honest with you. If there's something that grabbed my attention is the loud arp that comes in right after the snare smacks. Well, the arp is definetly nicely composed but it made my ears bleed. Now I know anyone with a slight taste in trance will agree that the breakdown is an absolute monster. Massive saw pads with a monotone bass. The sweep that fades everything else away was brilliant. Now here's where I think the track kind of loses it's radiance, after that sweep it feels like you rushed right into the build up. It would have been nice to heard a more extensive build up/break kind of thing. Introduce a square melody or some type of melody to guide you through the song. And being that it sounds really progressive, a nice airwave sweep would have pulled it off in introducing the kick and bassline again, instead of throwing it all in at once. Other than that, great tune. Polish it up and shine it in all it's glory.

THE GOOD

Monster breakdown
Beautiful arp
Massive Pads
Fast paced bassline
Oozing with atmosphere

WHAT IT NEEDS

A slightly extended build up after the breakdown.
A slightly longer build off during the tunes ending (feels like it was rushed)
Turn down the volume on the snare smacks and arp at the beginning, just a little

a melodicaly pleasing track with some nice trance elements. The percussive aspects are off level and i think with some proper mastering and some rythmic ingenuity, this track has loads of potential to be amazing.

Thank you all...

You've definately motivated me to continue polishing this track up. Arrangement will get more attention, as well as the melodic layers.

There's been complaints of the kick... I will see what I can do, as it was the closest sample that I could find that'd fit the mood.

Hanging around this trance-forum has helped me alot from my beginner stages of production to present.

@ Kris Xperiment

Holy Buckets! I'm flattered by the painstaking review you posted. Now I suppose this means the pressure is on...

I'll work on your suggestions. A smoother transition from the breakdown... and watching EQ levels of that arp. Thanks.

Hey mate,

Listened to this track of yours after reading some nice reviews about it. I can't say I am as enthusiastic as Kris Experiment though. You have a lot of nice ideas but to make it a real good driving trancer you should try to focus on :

- Your percussional section. The track lacks energy because there is no pacy hihat, no other real driving percussional element to glue between the kick (which you really need to replace by a kick with a better high end) and bass.

- You have nice melodies and ideas but your choice in sounds (which of course is a matter of taste) is not always superb. The pads you use are a bit too uhmm metallic. I think if you'd try to use more dreamy wider pads with a nice touch of reverb the track will become wider, more airy. Also try layering different strings on top of each other during the break, a dreamy pad on top of a more heavy bassy pad will do wonders

What I do love about this track:

- the arp sound which kicks in at around 1.20 is amazingly beautiful. With a nice driving beat and percussion this would just be a big trip

The breakdown itself is reached nicely and I can see the potential in it.

If you focus on soundchoice and percussions in coming tracks you will become quite good very soon, the ideas in your head are there mate and that is the most important start. I am looking forward to your work in the coming months I am betting you will amaze us and yourself soon.

Cheers,

Nomen Nescio
