[REVIEW] Meat Katie & Dylan Rhymes @ Opel's 4th Anniversary Party (Mezzanine)
I almost didn't go to this because Momu & Nick Warren beat me the fvck up the night before. But after a taste of breakbeat from Nick & Co. I HAD TO go see Meat Katie & Dylan Rhymes and 7 hours of breaks, plus it's an anniversary party and those are always off the chain. Opel is also one of my favorite party crowds. Probably the most diverse, urban party crowd.
What a production Opel put together. The night started with an erotic fashion show with a catwalk in the middle of the club and the dj laying down downtempo music while the models molested each other. Then probably midnight Syd Gris from Opel gets on the mic and gives a youth-of-america/political call-to-action speech and then tells everyone to party on. They also brought in a bunch of acrobat dancers doing crazy curtain/hoop moves and backflip dances on the stage.
Then came the breaks... wow, you really have NO IDEA how many different breakbeats and backbeats there are until you hear 7 solid hours of it. The thing I love about breaks is it's ability to induce everyone to dance and get sucked into the beat. Not the head-bobbing and toe-tapping, but arms flailing, feet kicking, spinning, twisting dancing. Dylan Rhymes, Meat Katie and the closer Smoove have a real ear for party music, or maybe it's easy for them, but they were pounding out the energy until 5am. The only track I can remember right now is an E Samba breakbeat mix, but I have a bunch of videos if anyone cares to ID some songs...
