Better soundcard helps lower your latency. But if you are running many vst synths then CPU has more affect on your latency (since that is where all the work is done). The soundcard limits your *lowest latency*, while the CPU is the *actual* bottleneck.

so is that a yes? no? will replacing the AC97 with audiophile spare some CPU use?

Digital Signal Processing? Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's like saying "my car uses an internal combustion engine, but how much faster will it go?"

A soundcard with ASIO should REALLY increase your performance, unless your problem is processing that needs to be done by the CPU, as low pro said.


So if many channels is your problem, new soundcard. If many effects is your problem, new computer.

well i installed Audiophile, and it proves you right... still at 50 percent CPU running with a view VSTs, so i baught that sucker an extra fan to keep him cool. as for the sound, the 10 dollar speakers from a decade ago sound marvelous! (within their ability)

Asio is a technology specifically designed to reduce latency. Better cards are less likely to have clicking or other latency related issues. If you've set up your computer pretty decent without asio, asio will not improve overall performance one bit. It is possible te get low latency on cards which do not support asio or any related low latency designed protocols.

With my former soundcard I was able to have lower latency with directx than asio for instance. That's a good example of a bad asio card (thanks creative).

Making use of asio could reduce some cpu overhead, but probably only very few percent.
