ok, i'll try to explain why...
for the sake of argument, i will refer to "soccer" as football, the reason why will become clear...
primitive versions football has been played for hundreds of years already, but without standardised rules and equipment (pigs bladders were used as the ball, for example). so in the late 19th century, the first ever football association was formed in the UK, in an attempt to standardise the rules/regulations. hence the word "soccer" was derived from "association football", as it was known.
a perversion of the rules brought about by some guy picking up the ball and running with it (in a place called Rugby) led to what is known as Rugby Football, of which split into Rugby Union, Rugby League and spawned Australian Rules Football (which is something like Rugby, except more "Australian") and American Football (which is something like Rugby, except the players wear armor).
But football had spread throughout the globe fast and soon established itself as the global game. And football was just that in other countries...futbol, fussball, le football etc... Football federations all had the word "football" in some language or other in their title eg FA, UEFA, CONCACAF, FIFA etc
At the same time, the American Football variation was growing in popularity in America...and so it came to be colloquially known as "Football" in America, hence the establishment of the National Football League. And when football ("soccer") came along to America, they couldn't call it "football", because that was American Football (which was an offshoot of Rugby Football, which came from Association Football, ie "soccer").
And as for the ball shapes...variants of Rugby football had "bladder" shaped balls, while Association football had round balls because that is the only way the game can be played (the first footballs weren't very round, mind you).
well, i've tried to sum up the story of football in 5 minutes. hope this helps!
btw you should be pround of the US Soccer team...they beat England 1-0 in the 1950 World Cup, and Portugal 3-2 this year (the US also hosted the 1994 World Cup, but i guess you guys weren't too big on "soccer" back then ) |
WOW
Thats some deep shit man!!
I can see your knowledge is greater than mine when it comes to the history of the sport. OK you win
But still people, this thread is for NFL Football, so please keep the replies to this category!!! There are plenty of other soccer..... i mean football threads to go around!
